Hi,
I have some sheet music from an old relative of my wife. They are nicely printed
on paper (printing shop) and 105 years old this year. I would like to scan them
and hopefully have them converted to lilypond or xml or whatever is used today.
It seems that MusicXML is the most used today but the best would be lilypond.
Anyone know of such software for Linux? I saw an app for iPhone and Android that
seemed promising but much cooler would be a native Linux program.

Hi,
I would start with the MuseScore service: https://musescore.com/import
If that works for you for the import, you can then work with the sheet
in the MuseScore software (works great on Linux, and the non-free or
not-fully-available on Linux parts are for playback not notation) or you
can export to MusicXML.

Thanks, I tried that but it doesn't seem to work. People have complained in the
forum. Even with the same PDF as one person it got it working but not other
people. I converted my JPG to PDF first with imagemagic but also with
libreoffice-draw and several incarnations of my JPG (bw, gray and full color).
I will go through the forum again.
https://musescore.com/import seems to use the software suggested by Christopher
Arndt. I'll see if it needs some custom made PDF.

This is how I did it using ImageMagick:
$ magick convert scan_fullcolour1.png -colorspace gray grayscale_page_1.png
$ magick convert scan_fullcolour2.png -colorspace gray grayscale_page-2.png
$ magick grayscale_page_* grayscale.pdf
upload grayscale.pdf to https://musescore.com/import
Then comes the hard part, in Musescore. Edit all the wonky stuff that got wrong
in the OMR.

I experimented with this a few years ago with mixed results. I think I
was trying out Audiveris at the time:

Apparently it is used by the IMSLP project, so it can't be that bad.
