Hi all,
i'm looking for a spectrum analyzer that looks ace and by that I mean
aesthetically pleasing.
for example, calf eq has very nice gui, and you get a nice spectrum
analyzer at the back.
well i'm looking for something that is I can tweak (colours, bars, offsets,
perhaps the themes as well etc) but that is as pleasing to see as the calf
effects.
It might as well be heavily based on openg, to boost graphics or whatever
else.
is there anything out there?
I want to set it up on large video walls, to accompany music playing.

Hello Athanasios.
I once used Bauline (http://www.baudline.com/).
It was to display the harmonics of a throat singing performance
so the public would understand what was happening on stage.
It is a precise visualization tool, not an eye candy,
but it is possible to change a few parameters.
To me, the default settings are esthetically pleasing.
There's apparently a new version coming, with more features.

So, basically, the author should stop asking money for the source code
and provide links for downloading it, or simply ask the same amount of
money to download the binaries, so those who pay could release the
binaries and the source code without fees. Or he could simply stop
pretending he's using the GPL license.

New code should never be wrongly attributed.
No license allows wrong attribution. It's a fundamental principle:

All we can do is be vigilant, or hide in the forest.
Free licenses are clear, and based on traditional copyright laws, or
else there would be no such licenses, compatible with national and
international laws.

The copy of Baudline I downloaded did not have a copy of the GPL with it.
I think what we are downloading for free is the proprietary-licensed
version. The license information in the README file supports that. Under
the GPL he is only required to offer source to people he distributes his
software to under the GPL. This allows him to charge for the GPL version
and only provide source to those customers.
He may actually be in full compliance with the GPL. Ironically, this is
because, as Marc said, he is "pretending he's using" the GPL, rather than
really using it--at least in this sense: the publicly available copies of
Baudline are not covered by the GPL.

Sonic visualiser [1] is rather nice, and configurable (and of course
does much more than sonograms). As it's designed as an analysis tool it
doesn't work with 'live' input though.
A while ago Cédric Roux (a.k.a. Sed) wrote Spectrojack [2] starting from
a similar search request I made for open source (and horizontal)
scrolling sonogram which would work for Jack - live. The programme is
very configurable and has various colormaps.
I just tested and it still compiles and works on my Debian. I only
needed to patch the Makefile with the attached patch and have all the
installed the dependencies.
