hi everyone
i'm just wondering why so many people are using
ubuntu studio and/or ubuntu 9.04...
i'm still on ubuntu 8.04 (not ubuntu studio),
running this on a lenovo T61 laptop for mobile
recording and a self-built intel/asus-based
desktop for the studio. i use ardour, audacity,
jack, pd, etc with hammerfall sound cards and have
experienced no lock-ups whatsoever in nearly two
years.
my question: is there some reason to move up to
ubuntu 9.04 or to use ubuntu studio at all?
re-configuring a vanilla 8.04 (with real-time
kernel, etc) was very easy (and i'm a fairly
low-level linux user). i would suggest this route
if people are having so many problems with ubuntu
9.04.

Personally I used ubuntu studio up until 8.04 but one reason I could
think of is that ubuntu is already outdated when it gets released.

In my experience 9.04 is a step backward in stability from 8.04. My
work desktop was up for 121 days before I upgraded. Within a week I
have had an X lockup that required a reboot.
In my case I suspect the new open source ATI driver, previously I had
used fglrx.
The main reason to upgrade is hardware support. Many wireless and
sound chipsets work a lot better in 9.04.
I upgraded for the "native" Exchange support in Evolution which is a
complete joke - it crashed as soon as I entered my Exchange
username/password and hit "Authenticate" :-)
There is no reason to upgrade unless you have a specific problem with
earlier releases which is definitely fixed in 9.04.

Yeah, your 9.04 experience will certainly be hardware dependent.
Considering that no Linux vendor (and probably not even Microsoft) has
the resources to test their distro on anywhere near the range of
hardware they have to run on, it's impressive this stuff works at all
;-)
