Hello. Would any of you know if anyone manufactures a portable
USB disk recorder? It needs to work as standard USB disk so that
I may freely use it in any Linux and in any MS Windows 2000/XP.
Below is what I have found so far:
Creative, Nomad Jukebox, http://www.nomadworld.com
-Good but requires a proprietary driver
Archos, Jukebox Recorder 20, http://www.archos.com/
-Records only mp3 and at rate 160 kbps
I don't understand why Creative always make their products
too complicated: SB Live, Jukebox and all. What's wrong in them?
OK, I have waited several years for a portable hard disk recorder
to be used in my free sound library project, and it looks like
I never get such a recorder. I don't have money to buy an expensive
portable DAT recorder. Are there other options? Help.

How about the MiniDisc recorders. They are very good quality (some claim
99.9% of the CD quality), and very affordable (i.e. $200 range).
Also, consider PocketPC running Linux or Windoze (iPaq with the
coresound's addition), although this might get messy (in terms of
transferring large files onto the main computer via USB 1.0 protocol)
and possibly rather expensive.

There was something posted here recently about using a Palm Pilot or
some little PDA like that as a portable recorder for 24-bit/96KHz
work. It ran about $200 and looked pretty cool for what it was, but
it may be vaporware at this point. Check the archives. It was about
2 weeks ago if I remember. (Might have been LAD and not LAU)
I tried to Google it but it's not coming up.

The card exists AFACT, but theres no acompanying AD converter, so youd to use your own.
PDAudio-CF has Linux ALSA drivers available for it and it works with any
S/PDIF-generating front end, including mic pre-amps (our soon-to-be-released
Mic2496, Denecke's AD-20, Grace Lunatec V3 and others), A-to-D converters
(Benchmarks's AD2K, M-Audio's Flying Cow and many others), CD players, MD
recorders/players, DAT recorders/players, computer sound cards and others.
We're taking pre-orders on PDAudio-CF and expect the first production lot to
ship within a few weeks.

Hi Juhana,
I have a Star Tech external IDE box -- you can put just about any IDE
device inside and it connects via USB. I got the cdrecorder to work
under Linux/Windows, however, you may find issues with disks of greater
than 80GB.
Portable is used loosely as the Star Techr requires A/C and can
accommodate a 5 1/4" device.
