i would like to start with the "correct"

the initial (peak) normalisation was done in ardour. maybe i should
have normalized the initial impulse area to unit energy rather than
the highest peak to unit amplitude, but i'm not quite sure how to
accomplish that. the normalization feature in aliki doesn't seem to
do anything, or i'm misunderstanding something.
Not normalise, select the W channel only, zoom in on the direct sound
and put a marker on it. The other marker should be off. Shift-L-click
on the Gain/Norm button. The will normalise the energy in a short region
around the marker.
Now since is this W, the level should actually be 3 dB lower. So set the
gain to 0.71 * the displayed value, and L-click on Gain/Norm. Then remove
the direct sound etc.
