Hello
I got a new synth in December and thought I'd do a short piece to get to
grips with it and put it through its paces. You can find it here:

I set myself the limitation that it would be the only synth/keyboard
instrument used (wot, no Mellotron?!), so everything other than drums,
percussion, acoustic 12-string and electric 6- and 12-string is just
this one synth. It was also the first outing for my electric 12-string,
which came out nicely.
It was an interesting challenge, especially trying to wrangle a range of
sounds out of the synth, as it is non-programmable and monophonic, so a
huge amount of multi-tracking and layering was needed.
The piece has turned out a completely different way to what I was
expecting before I set out, ending up with a bit of a Goblin horror
soundtrack vibe, so I gave it an appropriate (and also slightly topical)
title.
Recorded, mixed and mastered in Ardour 3.

I can't quite put my finger on why I think it
sounds a bit like Goblin, it just
seemed to have a slightly dark, menacing tone to it, maybe even slightly
cinematic (all of which is absolutely fine by me).
There's of course the rainy background, the minor-centrism of the
harmony and the slight oddness of the beat, but for me the warmth of
the synth sound provides the prevalent mood.
But one thing's for sure, it sounds absolutely
nothing like Genesis :-)

nothing they made (but perhaps you already know that :). In any case,
to me it matters not where you take it from, but where you take it to.

Sounding thin isn't a problem, in fact, I don't think the woodwind
emulations would sound as good, but it certainly lacks the fullness and
warmth of a Moog. It's interesting how subjective these things are and
how totally inadequate language can be at describing them :-)

This tune has something that I quite like, Q.
Maybe that Goblin thing it rings on you has to do with the sounds of
Labyrinth OSB composed by Trevor Jones. It reminds me a bit.
Also, the brass sounds reminds me a little of Chick Corea's record "My
Spanish Heart";
If I may, I would suggest you could fix some detuned strings (I think
that's in some parts of the 12 string guitar) and some tempo drifting
(or it seems so in context with other layers).
Overall, a really good pile of layers, sounds and parts in a composition.

Thanks for listening, glad you enjoyed it.
I know the film you mean but I've not seen it 20-odd years so I can't
bring the score to mind. I'll have to see whether I can find it on YouTube.
Corea is someone whose music I'm not familiar with and I don't intend
changing that.
The 12-strings were very carefully tuned: I never tune them perfectly as
I feel that partially negates the effect of using a 12-string. And to
misquote Mr Fripp, tuning a 12-string doesn't!
The overall tempo drifts, deliberately so, in order to try to achieve a
more organic feel and minimise the feel of being recorded in a DAW to a
rigid click track. Within that, certain instruments almost certainly
drift more than others: anything that was grossly out of time was
re-recorded until it was right but nothing else massively offended me.
But I realise different people have different tolerances for timing
variation and these days that tolerance is much smaller and less loose
than it was back in the 60s and 70s.
