By recommendation from this list I just got a Tascam US-122. I can't
get it to play with my Debian etch system, though.
I've installed alsa-firmare (from DeMuDi), alsa-firmware-loaders and
alsa-tools, and lsusb gives me something like:
Bus 002 Device 004: ID 1604:8007 Tascam US-122 Audio/Midi Interface
Could someone explain what else I need to do? I've Googled, but all
the instructions I've found seems specific to other distributions, and
won't work here.

However, no /dev/dsp device appears (I'm using udev), and `aplay -l'

you, but it needs

Debian has a bunch of udev triggered scripts that sets that up for any
soundcard, so I'm assuming it will work as soon as ALSA properly
identifies the device.

To reiterate, this is what I've tried, in sequence:

(Succeeds.)

If I specify a card for usx2yloader to load the firmware onto, it at

The most stupid obvious question is have you actually configured ALSA?
I don't know enough about this device to ask any intelligent ones. ;)

For good measure I thought I should summarise my problem again, now
that I've struggled with this a couple of days more.
It was suggested that I should use a `nrpacks=1' argument to the
snd_usb_usx2y module when using the US-122, so I have specified that
using modconf.
Now, if I boot with the US-122 connected, I can for starters see it
using lsusb:

device, so I can tell that part is working.

I have this device. I never have to pass an argument to usx2yloader I
also have never used nrpacks=1. I never needed to. The first time I
set it up I ran the fxload on the first firmware that is needed. Then
usx2yloader just works without any argument. The usb light should light
up on the device once both sets of firmware are loaded up. I had to run
lsusb to figure out were it was mounted in my /proc/bus/usb. I believe
you need to have usbfs for any of this to work.
fxload with the first rom came with the EZ-USB package.
I highly recomend doing by hand first before assuming that hotplug has
done anything at all correctly.
I can give you more details once I have my debian box working again.

Well, if I don't pass usx2yloader the card argument it just says:

So, usx2yloader seems to be where my problem is. It doesn't succeed,
and I've never gotten any LEDs to light up on the US-122. At best I
get this:
$ sudo usx2yloader -c 2
usx2yloader: error in loading /usr/share/alsa/firmware/usx2yloader/us122.rbt
Could you tell me what version of alsa-firmware you have, and where
you got it? (That is where the us122.rbt file comes from.)
The first time I set it up I ran the fxload on the
first firmware
that is needed.
That seems to work. I figure out the USB bus with lsusb, and run:
sudo /sbin/fxload -s /home/bkhl/src/usx2y-fw/usx2y-fw-0.1b/ld2-ezusb.hex -I
/usr/share/alsa/firmware/usx2yloader/us122fw.ihx -D /proc/bus/usb/N/N
I hear a click and the program succeeds without any output.
I believe you need to have usbfs for any of this to
work.
I assume I have it, since loading the firmware works.

I have tried it by hand, too, in every order and fashion I have been
able to think of. hotplug gets exactly as far as I do. That is, it
loads the firmware correctly, but it fails to activate the device.

why it doesn't find the card at all without the -c argument.

can't really see where you're going wrong, but as far as i remember i
didn't run usx2yloader as root.
did you try just running usx2yloader without the 'sudo' command?

version of alsa-firmware they have successfully used with US-122.

if something has gone to "dmesg" as well.
the chipset is not like the one, i had trouble with.
me thinks it'd be best to compile/install a recent kernel
with CONFIG_SND_DEBUG_DETECT set and check if dmesg shows
something ( like "dsp_load") then.

version 1.0.8-r1 I don't know if that will help or
