Hello *,
I am working professionel (not as musican) and like to use a program
like rosegarden, but without KDE and GNOME. Because I must maintain
all of my computers my self and make backports and own packages (I am
working under Debian) I do not want to maintain tonns (86 MByte) of
EXTRA packages from KDE, which deinstall in the same time my half
workstation (I hate those monsters of KDE and GNOME and using only
fvwm which works perfectly since 1999).
Is it possibel to compile rosegarden without KDE?
If not, is there another equivalent program?

That's ridiculous. Disk space is dirtcheap nowadays. Rosegarden only
depends on the support libraries and does not force you to actually use
KDE. You've put yourself in a weird/bad situation by not using
packages... Applications are developed faster by using preexisting
infrastructures, like the GNOME or KDE support frameworks.

Yes, it is: Rosegarden doesn't need KDE (at least if the programmers
did their job). It just needs kdelibs which is much smaller and faster
to compile/install than whole KDE.
And please stop ranting about the major desktops. They are doing a
very good job, promoting Linux for the desktop thus drawing attention
to Linux thus winning more skilled programmers to Linux which gives
YOU more fantastic apps to use. Think about that when you complain
that some of these programmers decide to use some (imho fantastic)
libraries and don't spend time reinventing the wheel again.
If not, is there another equivalent program?
There is muse. But this also uses Qt and might fall under your
definition of "bloated crap" :-P

So even if you're running GNOME or IceWM or whatever, you are
also running KDE while you're running Rosegarden, just not the

I personally have no problem with that, because (1) I run KDE
already and (2) Rosegarden has never been advertised as a
lightweight anything, but I see their point. I doubt other
full-featured sequencer apps are much lighter.

It is not only me, because I am designing desktops for countries
where a CPU's with 500 MHz with 128 MB of memory is the maximum.
Even if I run curently 4 Quad-Opteron with each 32 GByte of memory,
99% of my friends will never have such machine.
My smallest machine is currently a Sempron 2200+ which is allready
to expensive for most of my friends. (I have bought it in germany
for 220 € without OS)
If the Geeks and Nerds here think only on there self...
...there will never a real success story about OSS!

Correct. Everything KDE seems to depend on everything else
KDE, and when you use one small part of it all the rest gets
dragged along. And all that stuff starts doing hideous
things behind your back and has to be killed off manually,
followed by a general cleanup of your system. It just bad
design IMHO.
Why should K3B play ugly desktop sounds when it finishes
burning a CD ? My sound system is normally adjusted to
music with a low average level but very high dynamics, and
consequently will produce *very* loud noises with these
full level clips. They could even easily destroy the
speakers and once just failed to do so (they triggered
the built-in protection, which in all the years I've been
using those speakers never happened before). The hearing
loss was temporary.
And you can't even disable this madness except via
the KDE 'control center'. Why should I even consider
running that when I don't use KDE ?
I decided I had enough of this and have now just banned
all KDE from my system - both the desktop and the all the
apps. As to Gnome, I don't like the apps generally - some
have been dumbed down with each new version I installed.
I now just use gdm because it looks better than xdm, and
that's about it.

I've had the problem in the other direction; there used to be a
program called "switch" that would let you change the style and
font of all Gtk/GNOME apps without running GNOME's control
center, but if it's still around it's not packaged by Mandriva
and gnome-control-center just brings up a blank window under
KDE.
GNOME is wed to gconf and KDE is wed to a million little files
under the .kde directory (which is fine with me, because I'd
rather lose the settings for one app if power goes out or
something than all of my apps at once.... c.f. Windows
registry.) They both need to take their heads out of their
asses and compromise on some single config repository with
commonly named settings shared across both desktops.
I'm too used to little niceties like drag and drop menu items and
being able to go "fish://username@somehost" to browse files on
other machines (via SSH) to give up the modern desktop
environments, but I am tempted at times to move back to IceWM
anyway. There sure would be a lot less unexpected CPU hogging
when I'm trying to record audio that way.

The implementation of GConf has nothing to do with the Windows registry.
Its default backend uses XML files, with the settings of each
application stored in a different directory.

You're correct, I misunderstood gconf entirely. I'd still be
happier with a KDE-style prefs storage method since it's easier
to edit ini-style files with emacs or vi than it is to edit

If you mean /me, I've already adopted a solution that works
fine: I just don't install any KDE apps ;-)

Never found out how to do it. Actually I've nothing against
file browsers, I just hate it when they put unwanted icons
on my desktop. One more example of an app going beyond its

Actually I've nothing against
file browsers, I just hate it when they put unwanted icons
on my desktop. One more example of an app going beyond its
competences.
I've been using icons on my desktop since about 1987, and that's
something I still require. And I want them to be integrated
with the file management program. Something like rox comes
pretty close; I can't remember what annoyed me enough to stop
using it the last time I tried it.
Different users, different needs.... sometimes even different
needs for the same user at different times (like me wanting to
kill everything possible to reduce xruns on my laptop with USB
audio dongle, the <1% of the time I'm recording audio.)

simply set the "/apps/nautilus/preferences/show_desktop" gconf key to
false...
...or if you really hate Nautilus, delete it from the startup list in
the "Sessions" preference panel.

Sorry, I'm not a GNOME developer and I was only answering to someone who
asked how to remove the icons on the desktop... perhaps I shouldn't have
used the word "simply" (my english leaves a lot to be desired...)
The key isn't mentioned in the official documentation, as many others
nonstandard options. It's only available via gconf-editor (which is
installed by default, and has a search function), or by modifying the
config files by hand. The settings are grouped by application (in this
case "nautilus", and then "desktop"). It's a reasonable approach,
in my
humble opinion.
Ok, I'll just shut up... better talk about music than Nautilus, we're on
LAU after all :)

- Why aren't these sounds *disabled* by default ? When
I want to burn a CD, I don't expect the software that
I'm using to go online, format a partition, rename my
files, play sounds, charm my girlfriend, ...
I wrote to the author of K3B after it nearly destroyed
by speakers, and asked if it was possible to configure
K3B so it would do only its core business and nothing
else. The simple answer was: No, since it is a KDE app.

All this is precisely the attitude that causes bloat. It is obviously
not true that space and speed doesn't matter, namely in embedded systems
and recycled hardware. We should seriously make everything as small and
fast as possible and we could soon be running the same software on
desktop PCs, handhelds and toasters.
Unfortunately, the WinXP lookalike league makes that a bit more difficult.
To be at least a little productive in this post, to my knowledge,
Rosegarden depends on KDE like a golf ball depends on a club. That's why
I don't use it anymore (switched to XFCE and HAPPY). I use SEQ24 and I
am praying for rapid development on Ardour MIDI support.
(Can you believe UI oriented software that good can weigh at six megs
packed STATICALLY LINKED? Unbelievable!)

large programs on them, but remember that a hard-drive that's 7 years
old is a bomb ticking. Time for an upgrade.

you want to. Just another time- and effort-saving bit of advice, nothing
more. ;-)

My IBM DAQA-33240 works nicely...
I have many Conner CFS850A and CFS1275A here...
without any Sector problems
My newer 400 Gbyte HDD's are gone one year after installation.
Last week I have bought a new 3Ware 8500S-4LP and installed four WD
Raptor WD150GD... Maybe they live longer (SATA with SCSI-Hardware)
2000 Euro for 450 GByte of Diskspace...

I have kicked Windows in 03/1999 in the dustbin and used from one day to
another Linux 2.0.36. It was the hell at this time, but it WAS running!

There's two forces at work here: laziness and opinion. The programmers
doing this in their spare time understandably don't want to reinvent the
wheel, especially not doing something as mundane as GUI can be. More
featureful toolkits allow for more featureful apps with less effort.
Plus some people like KDE and Gnome.
My own tastes steer me to using the gui toolkit only and not the desktop
framework, which necessarily drives any software I write to be more
simple. This is because I as a user prefer fewer dependencies, and I
believe more people will use my stuff if they don't have to install
everything under the sun to use it. I also happen to think that good UIs
are simple and like to delude myself into thinking my choice of only a
toolkit (usually Qt) and my laziness are actually positive factors. :-)
Also I shouldn't hope to deceive anyone into thinking I write much GUI
code of any significance. I'm quite bad at it.
But I completely understand where developers that want to leverage the
more powerful frameworks are coming from.
Incidentally, disk space continues to be a problem even outside of
Africa. I have ample disk space but most of it is tied up in music and
video and my original guess at how big to make my root partition was a
little conservative. Although I did set up LVM, I'm too lazy to do
anything about it and so I am back to watching disk space and cleaning
cruft (and non-cruft) off my system periodically in fits of rage. Mostly
I don't want to have to decide which media must go to make room, and I
always think I'm going to use that media drive space for audio projects
anyhow...
Just my $0.02 in this rantfest.
