My Edirol FA-101 gives off a horrendous hiss during
recording AND playback (well, most people probably
wouldn't even notice it consciously, but I find it
horrendous), and I have concluded it is probably
due to the volume control being too low and me
therefore having to jerk up the pre-amps and
internal headphone amp (for which there are physical
controls on the device) way higher than intended.
So what I would like to do is simply turn up the
volume to the highest sensible point for all channels
and use jack applications to control the volume.
I don't need a GUI or anything for this and this is
a one time operation so PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE I BEG YOU
don't make me go ask some friend with a Windows PC if
I can install my driver on his device. I want linux
power. I also want to go around showing people things
they CAN'T do with their proprietary pieces of
slavery.
I'm used to compiling software, just give me a quick
n dirty solution, any solution! Thank you.

Hmm, the bad news is that there is nothing available to control the
device. It is on my plate to implement it but I haven't started with it.
There are some other todos as well. So the only q'n'd is the one you
really don't like. Sorry about that. But there is light :)

And you're sure this would take more than ten lines of code if you would
hard-code the volume-level? I wouldn't even mind compiling the program
each time I want to change the volume as long as I do not have to wade
in the evil waters of software dependency.

The thing is not the length of the program or the how you would to use
it even if it were dirty. The problem is to figure out what kind of AV/C
command has to be send to which subunit etc. Though I have access to the
documentation this is still not an easy thing to find out. Since you
seem extremely eager to get something I'll try to look into it asap. But
no promise it will be available soon.

LOL! Oh man I'm like a kid IN FRONT of a candy store. Well, reason
being: I got this great device, got my web site set up, wrote a GREAT
song (I believe it has hit potential in Switzerland, no exaggeration),
sequenced an AWESOME beat, wrote some fantastic lyrics, and now I can't
record it because my device volume is too low and the background hiss
would ruin the fun on the big club amps I intend my song to be played
on. Oh yeah, did I mention it was done with free software according to
the most purist standards?
You bet I'm eager.

PS: I didn't mention yet that my future survival depends on my success
in the newly-born free music industry and my ability to play gigs.

Hehe, you know how to make pressure, right? :)
Since your convenience standard regarding controlling the device is not
that high (even recompiling for new settings is not a problem) this can
be done in quick and dirty way.

do feel obliged to point out there is probably more wrong with my device
than the low volume.
I sent the vendor a similar e-mail.

The volume setting test program is now functional. I haven't tested it
listening to the output or input because I don't have a working
environment right now but from what I see what's going on it looks good.

In reality the max value seems to be 0 (0 dB) and the minimum value
-32768 (-inf dB, silence). The firmware will round the to something
meaningful.
The FA-101 has only input feature function blocks. So you can't control
the output level directly. I guess one can control that with the mixer
(missing feature).

The default values for the FA-101 are 0 dB so you don't seem to suffer
from that problem...
