Hello!
Well, I finally have fluidsynth running on alsa. The 'not starting'
problem was solved with getting the right version of alsa-lib; the 'no
MIDI input' problem goes away by 'aconnect 64 128' when fluidsynth is
already running.
But, even though I run it as root, fluidsynth's sound still audibly
breaks on a cpu/disk intensive operation - I tested it with starting
OpenOffice and with running sxid.
Is there any way to fix this? And should I try installing Timidity for
such cases? I just want the synth to work in parallel with regular work.

Hi,
In my experience it's often the way your card is configured for
interrupts. Please see some of the info on Jan Depner's page.

Try to make sure your sound card is on IRQ 9, 10 or 11, 9 being the best. If
you're on 10, or 11, make sure there are no PCI hogging devices on 9 or 10.
If this is an interrupt problem then it will happen with any application
that makes similar usage of the PCI bus and memory. I do not use Timidity,
but I would expect that it is similar.

You don't have a kernel with low latency or pre-emptible patches
installed? If yes, then this will happen again and again. Out of the
box, the Linux kernel is a mess for music.

Out of the
box, the Linux kernel is a mess for music.
That's to be expected if you are using a distro intended primarily for
servers. I've actually had better results - as far as stability and latency
go - with stock Mandrake kernels than I did with Windows 95/98. So it's all
relative. With the possible exception of BeOS, I don't think any OS vendor
has shipped a default multimedia kernel.
Sound on Sound has featured Linux for the second time in the April issue,
where the Cutting Edge column is about moving studio admin tasks off the main
audio machine and on to a Lindows box. Making the Linux box run NAT to help
protect a Windows machine from internet attacks was also covered.
The May issue will have a feature I wrote on building silent hardware. The
machine described runs Linux, Blackbox and Audacity for minimal CPU load. I
ended up fitting one 60mm fan with a speed controller, so it's not silent but
pretty close.

audio
dropouts under load, that's why it is strongly recommended that you
use a preempt- or LL-patched kernel.
Sure - it's almost as if the stock kernel is the first building block in a
customisation process. I suppose Slackware users are expecting to recompile
at some point anyway.
It would be impossible to satisfy all the uses that Linux is put to with a
single kernel - and yet other OS's, we are told, can do this. Is OS X sold
for both rackmount servers and multimedia use with the same kernel, I wonder?
I suspect Windows XP is too.
