I need help troubleshooting a recording issue on a dedicated audio
computer with a single DSP2000 C-Port. I can not record from the
analog inputs of my audio interface. I suspect that it is because the
analog volume tab on the envy24control mixer is missing which means
that I can not raise (or activate) the ADC sliders.
1) Should the analog tab exist for an ICE1712 device (dsp24 with an
ADC&DAC2000)?
2) If yes - can anyone help me troubleshoot why the tab is not there?
3) Can anybody confirm if the DSP2000's channel LEDs should light up?
(They do light up when using the OEM drivers on an XP partition of the
computer)
A lot of solutions to this problem are “on the envy24control analog
tab, make sure the sliders have been moved up". Without that tab, I
can not see if this is a solution to of my recording woes....
Hardware / Software

motherboard is a dsp24 pci card connected to an external 8 channel
ADC&DAC2000 box. (aka DSP2000 -

running Fedora 17 with PulseAudio removed and a realtime kernel
(3.4.11-1.rt19.2.fc17.ccrma.i686.rtPAE) installed.
The pci hardware is found, the ICE1712 mods load, and alsa reports the
card as device 0 (the only device). The card does work when booted to
an XP partition on the machine.
Driver versions are:
alsa-lib-1.0.26-1.fc17.i686
alsa-tools-1.0.26.1-1.fc17.i686
jack-audio-connection-kit-1.9.8-9.fc17.i686
The jack subsystem is working fine for synthesized audio and playback
of existing files. My USB control services are passing through jack
just fine. My problem is that I can not get the analog inputs on the
DSP2000 to activate. I am absolutely sure that I am sending a signal
to the input box - but no combination of settings on the alsamixer or
the envy24control seem to be effective in activating the input
channels or recording the signal.
To record, I am running a Shure SM58 into a PreSonas Bluetube preamp
and running the unbalanced out into the DSP2000 input 1 (I have tried
all eight) of the DSP2000. When the same signal is run into a
standalone mixer - the meter shows a hot signal. The DSP2000 has two
preamps - I can get the clip indicator on the DSP2000 to trigger if I
push the signal too hot. That tells me that I am getting a signal to
the breakout box’s input.
I would appreciate any help or troubleshooting tips anyone could provide.

I've been waiting for a test case like this!
With Envy24, the support of ADC/DACs was kind of hard-wired.
If it didn't recognize the ADC/DAC, well it just didn't show the tab.
So one of my priorities with Mudita24 quickly became supporting
ICE1712 cards with as-yet unknown future ADC/DACs.
In that respect I rewrote the code to ask ALSA for all the important
information about ADC/DACs, instead of hard-wired info.
Give it a try.
I do expect there might be some issues, being an 'unknown' ADC/DAC.
Perhaps some checkboxes missing etc. ... ?

First thanks for the reply - I would love the be a test case.
I checked out the latest trunk version (14), compiled it with default
options and gave it a try. Still no Analog tab. :( The about tab shows
Envy Control 1.1.0.14. Both the Monitor Inputs and Monitor PCMs tabs show
the text "(off)" under all the meters. Is this expected? Any other
thoughts?

Yes, it is expected. The off means no signal has made a peak high enough
to read. Once a signal is there it will read in -xx.x up to 0db as the
peak signal since last reset. I find it odd that the Analog Volume is not
there. It does sound like you can get audio out though. Do you have the
Patchbay/Router tab? Does it show 10 outputs? (my d66 shows outputs 1-4
and 9-10) but I found I got no output till I raised the analog controls
either.
Another program to try for trouble shooting is qasHctl which gives a list
of everything ALSA found for your card in a tree like structure. On the
right side select hw:Card and 0: or whatever card number you are using. On
the left side under mixer see what is listed there. Anything with "multi
Capture" or "multi Playback" in it is the monitor mixer. Look for other
sets of 10.
I wonder if 1.1.* has fixed the profile saving...

I fixed one problem dealing with the wrong 'alsactl' (I think it's called)
program location in Envy24 - saving should work universally now, I hope.

i use(d to use) them all the time (they died and are currently in a repair
queue). there's absolutely no problem with external converters.
Is there no mechanism to set the converter levels other than hard-coded
hacks?
i think you're confused tim. external converters generally have no controls
at all. they are hardware boxes with a few switches here and there. there
are often no levels to set, and if there are, its under h/w control (and/or
physical alteration as is the case with my tango24's)

there is no problem to fix. computer OS drivers do not get to reach
"beyond" the devices they control to toggle parameters on unknown devices
that may or may not actually exist. its that simple. my RME device driver
has no idea what type of converters i am using, and no reason to do so.

So there needs to be a way to set their digital levels, at very
least initialize them - which I know with my card and a fresh install of
some distro always start out at zero. I think that's the poster's problem.
This is what the analog section of the Envy24 and Mudita24 mixer apps
are supposed to show - but I think only if the chip is on-board.
I thought that because the chip is not on the card, some bus can't see it
so ALSA can't see it, requiring some extra layer of communication.
I mean there's got to be a path to the chips somewhere.

by "external converters" i was referring to A/D and/or D/A circuitry housed
separately from the audio interface, and which communicates with the audio
interface via some standard or proprietary digital protocol such as ADAT,
S/PDIF, MADI etc. etc.

Don't see any level control on this page, just routing. The only level
control is the monitor mixer on the pci card. The converter may have level
controls available, but it seems this implementation sets them wide open
or 0db.
If I think about my multi-track tape machine, there is no level there
either (aside from inside for setup). Controlling the level is what the
mixer or preamp is for. There seem to be a number of pro/semipro IFs that
don't have digitally controlled levels. My USB box has manual controls
only, but then they are much more than just level too.
While I am at it :)
I am using mudita 1.0.4. If I set the patch bay so that hwout1-2 are
connected to the mixer and use the profile to save that as the first one
and then change the settings. The first profile doesn't seem to restore
it. However, if I go back to the stock e24c at 0.6.0 it did at least in
ubuntu 12.04... now in 12.10 it doesn't work either :)

If I think about my multi-track tape machine, there is no level there

mixer or preamp is for. There seem to be a number of pro/semipro IFs that
don't have digitally controlled levels. My USB box has manual controls
only, but then they are much more than just level too.

I am using mudita 1.0.4. If I set the patch bay so that hwout1-2 are
connected to the mixer and use the profile to save that as the first one

has failed.
Er... that is IF you have alsactl installed. Is it there ?
It is required for both envy24control and mudita24, otherwise no profile
saving/loading. I try to auto-locate in md24.
If you have trouble, --h says :

cmake does the searching for me. I thought I'd nicked that issue.

Just downloaded and looked at the manual for the unit. The outputs are
auto patched on power up but the inputs are not, the driver is expected to
do that It seems. The unit is listed on the alsa page as something that
should work or is known... so it is a matter of figuring it out. It seems
that there are no adc or dac volume controls even with the windows
drivers. What may be confusing is that the internal card includes an ac97
set of things and that does have volume controls.
So, The volume controls for the inputs and outputs are preset full up (0db
if you like). The outputs are connected by default, the inputs are not.
Either envy24control/mudita or alsa should show the patches to be
connected somewhere. as it appears that the ice1712 driver does not do
this for you. Any input that is connected _should_ show the light on the
external box.
So the next question would be... what tabs are there in mudita with this
device?
As an interesting side note, the manual says what we have all found out
with the ice1712 units and irqs. "It should be unshared if possible,
because the DSP24 is a busmaster device ... otherwise you might get
performance problems."

BINGO! About five years ago, this unit was deployed as part of a 24 channel
audio rack. Checking the switches, this unit had the dip switch set to
1111000000. I set it to 1000000000 and the LEDs lit up, all 8 channels are
receiving input. I guess the OEM drivers don't care what value the switches
are, as long as all the units have different values. FYI No analog volume
tab shows up - the audio is coming in on the monitor input tabs on the
envy24 mixer.

Your H-Bus hunch proved to be the clue that cracked the case. Guess what?
This unit used to be part of a 24 channel audio rack. And... what for it...
this unit had the dip switch set to 1111000000. I set it to 1000000000 and
the LEDs lit up, all 8 channels are receiving input.
FYI No analog volume tab shows up - the audio is coming in on the monitor
input tabs on the envy24 mixer.

Hm... there should be analog tab if the ALSA AKM converter drivers
were loaded.
You're lucky that the unit powers up with full converter levels, as Len
demonstrated, allowing you to get on with your work.
But you're gonna need that tab if you ever want to adjust AD/DA levels.
The monitor tabs are NOT what you want there, those are for the ICE1712.
The links Len posted showed that the user's ALSA picked up the
ADC/DAC2000 AKM brand converter chips.
When you type 'lsmod' to list loaded modules, do you see a snd_ module
called 'AK...' something?
Here's what mine looks like:

more, say using amixer or alsactl ?
It's important because if you now have ALSA "ADC" and "DAC"
controls, and
mudita is not showing them, then we may have a problem with mudita !

columns (1-8) and two S/PDIF Out Columns (L)and (R). Nothing in mudita24 is
labeled "multi Playback".

- HW Multi Capture Switch[8] (buttons all set to ch 0.)
- HW Multi Capture Volume[8] (sliders all set at 80)
Using QasMixer , I see the following channel sliders on the input screen
(when I select the picture of mic)
2 Sliders Labeled: IEC958 Multi, 0 - IEC958 Multi, 1
1 Slider Labeled: Capture
8 Sliders Labeled: H/W Multi,0 - H/W Multi,7
1 Slider Labeled: Multi Track Volume
All are turned on and up.

labeled 'Video', 'AUX' etc. are your AC97 controls. But I see no
ADC/DACs.
