Hi,
what exactly does the fader of Ardour's mixer for MIDI tracks control?
I noticed that CC 7, CC 10 etc. could be selected by the editor, in
addition to the mixer's fader. CC 7 does control the volume, while the
mixer's fader seems to have impact to the note velocity.
I suspect it simply increases or decreases the recorded note velocity,
but by what values?
= 64 means velocity +- 0?
64 means velocity * 1.n to velocity * 2?
<
64 means velocity * 0.n to velocity = 0?
Or does it something completely different?

However, if the Fader is placed after the synth (as is default). It deals
with the audio that the synth puts out. It does not control a synths CCs
(which would only give 128 positions) but rather fades the audio after
that. This gives .1 db steps with the mouse wheel, but less is possible
with OSC or script and a mackie control surface (or X-touch etc) with give
1024 positions (though Ardour will deal with all 14 bits if the controller
does, Mackie sets the 4 lowest bits to 0).
I do not know if the fader affects the MIDI velocity after a synth or not.
I would not expect it to (as a user) because I might feed it to another
track or buss or external synth... maybe someone else can comment.

Automation in the editor is a different animal and controls other things
besides just the fader. The fader as seen in the mixer is a straight gain
block whether applied to midi or audio.

At the moment it's just
Linux PC Ardour MIDI tracks -> RME HDSPe AIO MIDI out -> Focusrite Scarlett 18i20
MIDI in -> iPad Sample Tank
but DX7, Matrix-1000 and other should be used, too. IOW the faders
only deal with MIDI streams.

For a mixer that's very unusual since velocity not simply affects the
volume. So CC 7 and CC 10 are only available by the editor window? It's
not possible to get this for the mixer window?
FWIW CC 10 fader values >= 63 are displayed, but < 63 the values aren't
displayed. Is this a known bug for ardour 5.8?
Is there a setting to ensure that loop play for MIDI tracks works
unbroken? At the moment the cycle isn't played smooth.

The math for audio gain control and MIDI gain control are separate and
different.
The fader controls whatever types of signals are presented to it. If there
is audio, it will do audio gain control; if there is MIDI, it will alter
the velocity values of MIDI note on messages; if both are present, it will
do both.
It will never scale a MIDI note on velocity value to an illegal level.
