Hello.
Is there a player with similar design as gqview has?
Then I could easily play songs and move between directories.
I checked Alsaplayer but it does not provide the directory
browsing. Worse, Alsaplayer does not know anything what
happens in the directories: songs stay in the play list
even they are completely deleted.
Alsaplayer also does not show the filenames but prefers to dig
info from mp3 files and display that. I need names which match
with filenames (so that I don't have to guess the filenames!).
The playlist in Alsaplayer does not provide any grouping/folders.
All songs are in one list. I know a guy who has 10,000+ songs in
mp3/wma format. All can be managed easily with the software he
uses in MS Windows. That kind of software equipped with direct
directory browsing would be great in Linux.

Yep, it's true that the playlist in alsaplayer is the main showstopper
for this wonderful player. Still I only use alsaplayer, because IMO
it's the best in all other areas, especially in click-free playing and
good support for many sound APIs.

Yes, this is a good way, but most apps in this category indeed use
xmms, which can't even control its own volume correctly without a
soundcard mixer. There is a Pd external to control alsaplayer called
apctl. But Pd's playlist management is worse than alsaplayer's. :(

KDE 3.2 is out next week (hopefully) and it will come with Juk,
I believe. I haven't used it yet but it seems to have a good
reputation for managing media files intuitively.
And as far as some frontend program using various backend players,
just last night I tried mv'ing mpg123 out of the way and soft linked
xmms to mpg123 so now my irate-client calls xmms instead of mpg123,
which gives me a GUI player that I have more control over when using
the irate-client. This simple change improved my user experience.
