nice, I love it. I would say "deep," that's the
closest word that describes what I feel.
Just to know: how do you make such a piece?
More precisely:
1 - do you "play" some "instrument" (keyboard, MIDI
control stuff, anything) in realtime or is all this
put in a file (with or without GUI)?
2 - the sounds in the piece are all computer generated
or do some come from "natural" instruments (like
cymbals, we hear some of those) that you record
with a microphone?
Maybe you already described all this in the past
(it's been a while since I last read the list) so
don't bother repeat known stuff.
Some links with cool readings will do it.
(Maybe the title should say it all by the way,
I don't know much about those beasts.)

The piece began as an experiment in Wurfelspiele, a use of dice to
create musical material. I created and edited a step-entered MIDI
percussion track in Sequencer Plus Gold that lasted 1'47", recorded it
as a WAV with ecasound, then used rubberband to stretch it to 300 secs.
The timestretched WAV was then processed in AVSynthesis, using its
Csound-based tools. So much for the percussion. The other more distant
instrumental sounds are taken from another piece - a trio for flute,
horn, and bassoon - that received similar treatment.
Btw, all the sounds in this piece are originally from the 8mbgmsfx.sf2
soundfont that comes from Creative Labs (IIRC).
AVSynthesis was used primarily as a processor and mixer. The
timestretched tracks are treated to the same pan control and tuned
waveguide filter, but with different envelope characteristics. Both
tracks get the same reverb.
The piece is an homage to Kenji Kawai, Edgard Varese, and Mauricio Kagel.

ok, so just to be sure, there is no real instrument
in there? No real flute, horn, bassoon, whatever
recorded with a microphone?
I ask because at home I plan to make some music
once the little ua1ex has arrived.
I will do voice/guitar/(sort of) bass with real
instruments. For drums I plan to code a tool so
that I can record myself with two microphones and
use it as some kind of "analog midi" controller.
I don't have a drumkit and I guess my neighbors are
happy that I don't. I wrote a "virtual drum machine"
a few years ago but I don't know, I want the real
thing, play by moving my body instead of writing
files. (I could just get a drumkit, but neighbors
are a real issue here.)
The computer has also a little camera. Maybe I'll
use that to control music with my body in the air
(like wearing red gloves for easy detection or I
don't know) and I was wondering if I could have
other more or less realistic instruments (I think
about cello, which I like a lot) that I could control
that way.
So if you say that all the sounds in your piece
are artificial, that pushes me to explore these
areas.

Here's the MIDI sequencing toolchain:
sequencer --> qsynth --> jack-rack --> system_out and/or ecasound,
ardour, qtractor, whatever
QSynth uses the 8mbgmsfx soundfont, JACK-Rack employs the CAPS Versatile
Plate Reverb, and I have a script that runs ecasound in its interactive
mode for handy recordings. I also have a script that sets up the
software and its connections (thanks to QJackCtl's PatchBay). It's all
very fast.
I make heavy use of Csound's Waveguide filter as implemented in the
AVSynthesis program. It's a powerful tool for manipulating sound, and
I'm far from exhausting its possibilities. In fact, I'm far from
exhausting the possibilities of AVSynthesis.

You might want to investigate Csound, SuperCollider3, and the Processing
environment. IIRC they all have tools for exploring sensor control. And
of course ask around on this list, I think some people here have worked
with motion activation and other sensor control.

Very impressive stuff! A bit other-worldly and ethereal, and very
enjoyable. It's also a great example of the kinds of things you can
achieve using only small, simple samples if you use them in creative
ways in combination with other tools. I often bemoan the relative lack
of interesting soft-synths under Linux, so this was definitely an
eye-opener for me!
