Hi,
Is it possible to boot an linuxaudio distro from live usb and work with
JACK, Ardour etc.? How good or bad will the performance be? For example
for giving a workshop about Linuxaudio on Windows computers?

AVlinux seems to be based on Debian Stable. Not sure if
there's a repo
for if you want to make a customize iso.
There is a whole section on the AV linux manual pdf that describes how to create a
"persistent" bootable image on a usb stick.

I have used a AV linux image (ok not a persistant one) to work with a friends HP laptop
and record with Ardour [1] while Hydrogen was running. The latency, according to qjack was
25ms - not as good as my home setup but hey.

KX Studio will migrate to Debian too. So on a relatively short term we
will have access to up to date Linux audio packages for Debian from two
major repositories.

Afaik AVLinux is more or less designed to work from removable media.

You might also want to consider to INSTALL a linux distro to the USB

Recording 32 tracks of 48000hz audio in ardour to a USB thumbdrive might
not work so well. Running softsynths and some other apps that do not
rely heavily on disk streaming should work fine..

Well it's only the boot menu/grub on the USB drive. But it also just
occured to me that when you create e.g. a bootable USB drive with
Ubuntu's usb tool, you can actually reserve some capacity for changes
in the filesystem. This would allow you to alter the installed
packages on the image, etc.. So a full install to the USB drive is not
necessary.

Yes, exactly for the reason that you can make changes to the system (on
the USB drive) which persist reboots..

partition (ext* file system). This can be backed up to the USB stick at
the end of the day.
Anyway, I would not agree to lead a class in this way until I had made a
USB stick up and tried it on their machines to make sure I was able to
cover the class material I intended to cover.
