Comments (I haven't listened to it yet) indicate why, alak and alas, I still
use Windows for music production.
1. DX and VST effects. VST has coming, now to linux. I am more in the DX arena
with Cakewalk software, however. The DX effects I do use have VST equivalents
or twins so I have no objection to going over to VST under Linux. It is, I
understand, a much easier interface to program. ...but...
2. MIDI post-processing. I use Ntonyx software to process finished MIDI
sequences. This inserts controllers for more realistic playing style and the
results can be very good. Nothing of this ilk on Linux and not likely to
be--we are very accostumed to OpenSource and Gnu. These folks want to sell
licenses. The cost of this software is very reasonable for professional use.
The cost and development and supporting a Linux port is nothing to
snicker-at--Windows is a larger market still and one where folks fork up the
dough. (I have been employed in this business and understand the issue too
well.)
3. MIDI arranging tools. I use Jammer but Ntonyx's Onyx is an up-and-comer and
Band in a Box is an old mainstay. Again, these folks want to sell licenses
and ...
I can send mp3's on request (with usual copyright understanding) to illustrate
my point.

Ntonyx is pretty cool stuff. I had wondered if possibly Style Enhancer
might run under Wine? It would be fine to be a bit slow since you're
processing after the fact.

I would say that there are more tools for MIDI processing in Linux then in
Windows. In fact, that's what drove me to move to linux many years ago.
Common Music, PD, Csound, KeyKit all come to mind.
Understandably, you're probably lamenting the lack of an out-of-box equivalent
of whatever it is that Ntonyx does, more then a supposed lack lack of MIDI
post-processing apps in Linux, of which there are a great many.

What I really, really miss in Linux audio/midi wise, are apps that plug-in
to the host sequencer which would be Muse, Rosegarden right now. Using
Reaktor in Sonar, which I've been playing with this winter, is so
convienent. You can have any number of Reaktor ensembles as synths or fx
all plugged into your piece, and every time you open that document up, every
little detail is restored. I don't understand why there isn't a Ladspa
synth building application. Also the soft-synth scene in Rosegarden/Muse is
extremely weak if its there at all, (Fluid)?.

I guess you haven't checked out Jack (jackit.sf.net)? Jack is the glue that
essentially makes these things possible. And on a grander scale than what is
possible in Windows.
The thing that hasn't been clearly adressed though is the "every time you open
that document up, every little detail is restored", this piece of the puzzle
is only partially solved, there will be solutions coming up though, I'm sure.
For modular syntesis as in Reaktor you should check one of the many modular
syntesizers that are available, pretty much all of them support jack. They do
not yet possess the power of Reaktor, but that's only a matter of time,
right? ;)

There is, pretty much any modular synth
available now supports this. (Someone
correct me if I'm wrong, I seldomly use these things myself)

That is mainly because the internal synths of MusE are (in my mind) an
evolutionary step. When session handling on jack-level is available the
internal softsynths will be pretty much obsolete.
There are a multitude of synths available that are jack enabled, they are the
future.
Don't get me wrong though, I use the internal softsynths of muse all the time
with great success, it works great. But it's not the end of the line, at
least not for me.

Yeah, LADCCA - I was playing with it last night. It does a good job, but
each application needs a (little bit) of support.

Yes, there is a wealth of MIDI stuff in Linux, some a bit immature, most
getting better and better!
