I've just downloaded the planet ccrma materials and I will be installing
them over the weekend. I'm curious about the applications contained in the
package:
1. Is there a way to just install everything in one swoop, or do I have to
rpm -Uvh xxx.rpm every time on all packages?
2. What about packages (movie and sound players come to mind) that already
exist in some form in a standard RH 8.0 install? Will installing over them
confuse the situation?
3. I'm doing this on a Dell Laptop. Am I doomed to failure?

I have Planet CCRMA running nicely on my dell laptop. You probably need to
use the ACAPI kernel to get actual low latency, that's how it was for mine
(whihc I got last year).
Also install apt-get and synapic, then you can get everything in one fell
swoop.

This thing has a goodly chunk of it... including a lot of stuff that's
not mentioned in the listings. I'd break it down and run the individual
installs on stuff though. Most of the applications have an install
script in their folder that will take care of all the difficult stuff.
I'd definitely break it down to install it on Debian. It goes into a
loop somewhere near the snd install. I'm assuming this isn't the case on
Redhat. At any rate... it's really complete.

That's a typo, should be ACPI. It includes a more complete ACPI
subsystem that is necessary in some laptops to, for example, correctly

is v. bad, but I thought that was just the crappy Maestro 3i soundcard.

Accroding to CCRMA some laptops can't schedule intteupts properly without
it, and I found I couldn't get low latency on my laptop without it, I've
got an inspirion 2500, without the ACAPI version of Planet CCRMA I
couldn't even get low lantecy running as root, but with the ACAPI I get
good results as a normal user.

Josh,
Once you get used to the Planet flow it's very straight forward. I do not
use the CDROM, but update from their site online. Do the same if you have a
fast connection. It works for Redhat 7.2, 7.3 (my distro) and 8.0. The
kernel is 2.4.19 with patches.
Once you follow the instructions and get to where you are running their
kernel, all you do is:
apt-get update
apt-get dist-upgrade
this will bring your machine up to date for all RPMs you have installed.
Using Synaptic you can look at all of Fernando's database of apps. The music
apps are listed at:
http://www-ccrma.stanford.edu/planetccrma/software/packages.html
to install pretty much any app by hand is
apt-get install package_name
or you can do it with Synaptic itself.
I hope you enjoy the Planet. It has been a wonderful resource for me.

You should use apt to install the Planet CCRMA packages as it takes care
of solving package dependencies for you. The first time you install a
package you have to do a "apt-get install package_name", after that an
"apt-get dist-upgrade" will upgrade all packages that you have installed
and have newer versions in the repository. Go through the install pages,
I think it is all pretty well explained there.
It would be fairly easy to script that ("one command install"), but for
now I think it is more useful that you can just pick what you are
interested in.

Hopefully not :-)
I don't think I have that many overlaps on RedHat 8.0, one I remember is
timidity++ (adds alsa sequencer support and nicer and bigger sound
fonts).

I'm trying to run ALSA 0.9rc7 in exactly the same laptop model. Two nasty
points, I must load the snd-nm256 module before X loads (RAM memory is
shared between video and sound card, and modprobe locks the computer
otherwise) and what seems more strange to me, I must raise levels
using an OSS mixer each time I boot the computer, or I don't have
sound at all. Alsamixer only works after this. Any more experiences?

This NM256ZX works now for playing. However, it records awfully,

My old Dell Latitude with a 256AV sounds exactly like that.
It also hangs the system about 2 out of 3 times that I load it.
Takashi did some work on the drivers and it got better for a while
(hanging 1 out of 10 times), but with recent ALSA CVS it's bad again :(
