Well, I ordered my microphone preamp, now I need a microphone.
Based on the archives of this list and my budget, I identified
three. What I mostly will be doing is:
(1) Recording voice, either speaking or singing
(2) Recording acoustic instruments (classical guitar, clarinet)
(3) Recording chamber music.
So the three microphones are:
(a) Shure SM57 (Is there a difference between the SM57 and SM57-LC?)
(b) Shure SM58 (Though which one: the SM58-LC, SM58-CN or SM58S ?)
(c) CAD gxl 2200 large diaphragm condenser $60
Just from my naive understanding, the SM57 seems like it might be the
best "general purpose" microphone for my needs.
Do people have advice or other recommendations? Thanks.
Eventually I will buy a second microphone for stereo recording.

I was in a recording studio: the guy had me
sing through an SM57. Then he had me sing
through some $2000 mic.
Listening back, I could barely hear the
difference, some slight "betterness" in the
1500 frequency range that most listeners
would
never recognize while they're talking
to each other or doing the dishes or whatever
they do when they turn music on.
The SM57 is cardiode and has bass roll-off
below 40 Hz. Most mics roll. bass off below
50 Hz.
The SM58 is cardiode and rolls bass off at
50 Hz and has a slight boost in the above
1500 range (to bring out sibilance and other
consonant distinctions as well as natural
overtones of the singer's overall physical
structure.
Both the 57 adn the 58 (and most other
dynamic mics) roll highs off at 15K Hz. There
are some variations in the >15K Hz responses
(beware of peaks, don't consider valleys).
If I were to buy just one mic, it'd be the
SM57 (not the Beta 57). It does reasonably
well with voice, cymbols, kick drum, pretty
much the entire audio spectrum.

OK for amplified instruments, percussion etc, for softer acoustic
instruments you'll need a really low-noise preamp. IIRC 'LC' means
without cable.

For close vocals only, and only if you like that type of sound.
Certainly not for chamber music.
(c) CAD gxl 2200 large diaphragm condenser $60
Will be the best choice for soft instruments and chamber music
(modulo quality of construction and lifetime, for that price
you can't expect too much).

Skip the dynamic mics for now and buy a matched stereo pair of
condensors. I have a pair of small studio projects condensors and while
I can't read the labels on them anymore, they still sound like on the
first day. And this pair came with a stero mount;-)
If you insist on going dynamic (only when you record directly on the
mic, not for chamber and/o ambiance), decide between the SM57 and SM58
if you will. The SM57 seems better suited for instruments, the SM58 is
the de-facto (backup) standard on many stages for good reasons.
If you can't decide between the two, get a Beta58 or maybe an AKG in
the same price-range. Worth it, the beta58 sounds better then the
sm58...
But for what you want, a stereo-pair of small condensors, maybe
additionally a large condensor for voice.
Or stereo pair of large condensors from AKG or comparable...

I haven't heard of the "CN" version. The S version has a switch (do NOT
get this one!), "LC" has no cable.
The 57 and 58 are nearly identical. The 58 rolls off rolls off at 50Hz,
the 57 rolls off at 40Hz.
The 57/58 is "acceptable" for a lot of instruments and voices. It is
"the best" for none.
If you plan on adding a second mic for stereo recording, be aware that
no two 57s or 58s sound alike.
It's probably the best $80 mic, though.

+1 A switch is good for absolutely nothing, but catastrophes and in
addition this useless thingy sooner or later will get broken. The main
problem with build in switches is, that somebody at all events will turn
it off or on without permission of the engineer.

+1 I never used them myself, but I heard that RØDE Microphones should be
ok.

People moan about Behringer but I think most of the criticism is unfair
and Behringer mics are among the best *at their price point*. If you are
on a limited budget then they are certainly worth looking at. I use them
for choral work with my local church choir and in the past I've recorded
acoustic instruments and solo vocals. I've been very pleased with the
results.
B-1 = large diaphragm condenser, cardioid
C-2 = small diaphragm condenser, cardioid
B-5 = small diaphragm condenser, cardioid or omni

Either the B-1 or a pair of C-2s or B-5s if you need stereo. Pair of
C-2s sounds good on classical guitar if you put one over the sound hole
and one over the frets.
(3) Recording chamber music.
Pair of B-5s, every
single time. I prefer the sound of a pair of omni
mics in AB layout than a pair of cardioid mics in XY or ORTF layout, but
it depends strongly on the room.

Thank you for all for your input. Given my needs, and
that I only want to buy one microphone at this time, I
think I am going to go with the
Behringer B-1 Single Diaphragm Condenser
This I am told will work very well for voice, and can
work well for acoustic instruments. For chamber music
recording in the future, I may pick up a couple of
Behringer B-5 Single-Diaphragm Studio Condenser
or something else. Feel free to comment on
this choice.
