Pulse audio? It sounds like Pulse audio (the default audio system) has
grabbed 4 channels, which is its normal behavior.

Didn't have time to look at PA yet, but hooked the mtk22 to my laptop (also running
fresh debian stretch) and everything works fine here...

Thanks for your report so far. I'm definitely interested in this. I've
got a MTK12 connected to a box with ubuntustudio but was thinking of
moving to opensuse TW as I use that on my normal boxes. Opensuse TW has
kernel 4.11.8 at the moment.
