With soooooo much stinkin attention and emphasis put towards softsynths
these days, I'm curious... what are all you *other* linux audio musicians
who actually still use outboard gear (more than relying on softsynths)
using as a MIDI interface for your linux sequencers??
bonus points for anything that gives me more than 4 ports of i/o.
I'm using six pieces of midi gear in my studio these days, so a 4 port does
me no good, unless an arguement can be made that 2x 4-port midi i/os could
be more stable than one 8port i/o. (as I've heard before but has never
proved true for me).. . I'm using a motu midi express XT on one machine and
a Motu MTP AV on another. (both parallel devices) frankly neither have ever
been completely preferable to use in linux by any stretch, so i stick to
this toy of a box called a midisport 2x2 when sequencing midi in linux and
just use the motus on apple and ms OSs.
Man I do have to say I miss the pre-VST days. sorry, but things were better
(albiet a bit more pricey) then.

A used Emagic AMT works well and gives 8 ports i/o. But I never managed
to chain them to get 16 or more under Linux, worked well on Mac.
Man I do have to say I miss the pre-VST days. sorry,
but things were
better (albiet a bit more pricey) then.
These days are not gone. Still a lot of new synths are being released
and Midi is still not dead. Used digital synths and samplers are cheap
(something which you cant say about analogue synths). And there has
never been so much new analogue modulars available as today.
Coming from Emagic Logic I was never that convinced with Midisequencing
under Linux, so now I use a MPC and other sequencers/ rhythm machines
synched for my beat music, the computer became a taperecorder for audio.
Once I tracked everything the possibilities to warp the audio signals
with Ladspa Plugins or PD or AMS or CSound or whatever are endless. With
the cheap available harddisks this is a major change for me in music
making in comparison of the 90s, in that times I composed everything in
Midisequencers and recorded only a stereo master on DAT.

Emu Midi1X1, the interface in my Delta 1010LT and my Xiosynth, the
latter also occasionally doing duty as mike/line input and mix out ;-)

Hmmm, how do you use more than one MIDI device per port?
Either the MIDI Through ports on devices, or my homebrew four-port MIDI
Through box. Then each synth goes on its own channel (or for
multi-timbral stuff, each group). Channel-hungry things like the
ESI4000 go on their own port, simply because they *can* have 16 channels
all to themselves. The two CZ-family (CZ1000 and CZ230S) synths share a
channel with the Juno and the Kawai K1m because they're all pretty fast
software-wise but don't require many channels each - the Juno is
monotimbral and the other three are four-part multi.
I plan to add a MIDI keyboard controller, would like
to keep my existing
keyboard around for its sound capabilities.
Get another MIDI interface, and set up your udev rules and things so
that every USB device always gets given the same port ID. It will save
frustration and bad words later - usually a few months later when you've
forgotten *exactly* how it was set up.

I'm pretty much 100% OTB now. While I've used Rosegarden and seq24 as
a sequencer previously, I now use a GenoQs Octopus and the Korg Oasys
as hardware sequencers. For RG and the occasional linux midi note
conversion stuff I do in between hardware analog and virtual analog
synths and a analog drum machine, I use a 4x4 midisport and a 2x2
midisport.
I use "midi solutions" 4x and 2x mergers when using the Octopus or my
Oasys as a sequencer to control my synths, so I have enough control.
They also have 8x mergers. I'm looking at getting "midi solutions" 4x
thru box for having the Oasys single "midi out" go into 4 different
synths, since its my only 88 key keyboard that I use currently. All
these mergers and thru boxes are so I don't have to switch cables -
just turn the computer off, turn the gear on and it just works :-) .
Beyond all that, its about to be a speck xtramix hardware mixer, my
korg d888 digital recorder, hardware compressors and effects.

I use a yamaha UX256

I found it preatty cheap (less than 100 euro), it has 6 MIDI I/O and 2
"to host" ports (which I don't use). So far has served me well and it's
recognized and works plug and play.

hammerfall DSP -> Ensoniq KMX-16 (a 15x16 MIDI patchbay - if you ever
see one of these on craigslist or ebay, grab it, its awesome if you
can pay < $150 for it). somehow, every port on the back is in use ...
not sure how i got there given that i really don't make music ...

HW synths/controllers: Edirol PCR 800, Korg NanoKey (for the LapTop when I'm
travelling light), Roland P-330 Piano Module and my good old beloved Roland
JX-8P synth (fully functional).
Midi Interfaces: M-Audio 1010 and Edirol UM-2-ex (for lap top).
Midi stuff for guitars: POD 2.0 controlled by Behringer FCB 1010 (with UNO).
I really don't know if the P-330 will be in use anymore; I bought the Linux
version of Pianonoteq and I must (IMHO) say that it knocks the sox off almost
anything.
The JX will on the other hand be in use for years to come. I never get tired
of it and its sound are just great in any mix and almost any music style. It's
my second one and I keep an eye on the net and buy another one for spare when
the time and money is right.
