I am almost convinced that I want to go Linux audio in my studio. I
have a x64 3ghz dual core AMD based box that is my dedicated DAW. I am
now deciding which distro to use that will give me stable performance
with minimum effort.
64 Studio would seem like an obvious choice but because I would like
to have VST's available, I seem to recall that is a possible issue?
Beyond that, is there any other advantage(s) to using a x64 OS other
than RAM access beyond 4gb? Is there any 32 bit OS performance
degradation when installed on a x64 machine?

experienced a speedup of about 30%, when switching from an ia32 to an

Any issues that come up with windows vsts on a 64 bit Linux are gonna
bite no matter which distro you choose. Note that there are native Linux
vsts and a large amount of native Linux plugins these days so you should
be able to find an alternative to your favourite windows vst plugins if
they don't work over wine.
A couple of major benefits from going with 64Studio is that you get
access to paid support and a realtime kernel ootb.

Why choose? Swing both ways baby! Hit for both teams until you find
the team that makes you most comfortable. That's what grub is for.
Disk space is cheap. Run both, test both. It's just a reboot and if
you run into a problem.
Use a single home directory mounted in either install. Possibly keep
copies of Ardour sessions and other important things in case there is
a small compatibility issue.
I've run both for some time. Even on Gentoo it's not a big deal

Good to hear from you again...
After some deliberation, this is the most sensible way for me to roll
for now. And by that, I mean dual boot Vista x64 / 64Studio.
It's time for me to sit and write something completely native to Linux
Audio and stretch my open source legs again. While going pure Linux is a
noble thought, it's really about providing clients with what they want.
If I can find that ability within the current Linux Audio offerings,
then Windows will evaporate from my hard drives! :)

I'd be more inclined to say to run two computers. HyperCanvas and
Virtual Sound Canvas look old enough that they should run fine on a tiny
computer such as an Atom or a P4 from the trash. Although, if it was
me, I'd rather just buy a suitable sound canvas hardware module.
