Somehow, though, I didn't get the virmidi module. Can I put
that in separately? Also, what is out there io the way of console-based
sequencers, and for using a midi-capable keyboard, do I need to reboot,
and/or get other modules/drivers/etc?

New subject: [linux-audio-user] Alsa issues
For virmidi you will need to rebuild the alsa-driver with: ./configure
--with-cards=cs46xx,virmidi --with-sequencer=yes --with-oss=yes . You
can do ./configure --help to get a full list of options. As far as apps
go... I would check out:

IIRC you also need a switch like --enable-new-dsp or something for
cs46xx [to get hw mixing]..

Hey there all! Thanks for the pointers. I've added in all
those options, but when I try to use playmidi, I don't get anything. Am
I still doing something wrong?

Also, you will need to connect the midi input to whatever application
with aconnect. Check out man aconnect.

The CS46xx's wavetable synth is not supported yet. You have to use a
software synthesizer like Timidity.
