Hi,
as soon as I try to record audio from the mic in of my cheap
onboard sound chip, I never can intuitively set the mixer
settings so it will work right now. Every time, it's a
struggling with the settings and a trial and error action.
Makes no difference which mixer I am using, but best of all
works qamix.
So, my question is, is there a user documentation how
soundcards work and which parameters affect which aspects of
the signal flow in basic consumer cards?

Each card is different.
Onboard chips are supposed to be AC'97 compatible, so you can look
into the AC'97 specification to find out what your chip doesn't work
like.
If you have luck, there is a datasheet for your codec chip.

I'd like to mix my Terratec Aureon USB.
Meanwhile I noticed that the GUI of qamix can be configured
using xml files, so I'll try it out. Currently, it only shows
one control, that's a bit less ;-) .
I expect to be successful, so qamix will give me a better
control over my card.
BTW: I also googled to find a nice image showing the signal
flow of AC97 cards, but I haven't been successful. But the
AC97 is not that important at the moment :) .

What all AC'97 codecs have in common is that they

they exist) usually contain such a diagram.
I'll not do further research in the ICH, I guess, but I had
great success in configuring qamix using an XML file. Looks
promising. Cool tool.
Somehow I remember the times when I was struggling with a
terratec EWS ISA card some years ago on Win 95 :) .

The bXxxxxID and bSourceID fields specify how the
units/terminals are connected together.
In the bmaControls field, index 0 has controls acting on
all channels, while index 1 and greater specify controls
acting on that specific channel only.
thanks a lot. But now, it really gets too difficult for me.
Anyway, I managed to set up my card as desired, and I have
made screenshots of alsamixer - maybe I'll print them out and
nail it to the wall for later reference ;-) .
BTW: The aureon really works out of the box with the
snd-usb-audio-driver and is a card at a reasonable price for
the home musician I think.
Mixing the Aureon is more difficult. I found some pics of the
windows control panel on the web, which is much more
understandable. Should I ask Terratec for providing a nice QT
mixer GUI for it ;-) ?
Concerning the AC 97 card, I followed your hint and got a
sample block diagram which made me better understanding the
settings of kmix; I plan to derive a free diagram from it and
put it somewhere on the net.
