It seems those who switched from Github to Gitlab to escape from Microsoft
may have jumped from the frying pan into the fire. I've just seen news
on The Register that Gitlab is extending their 'partnership' with Google - I
didn't even know there *was* a partnership.
Interesting times :(

They integrate google cloud and Gitlab for hosting and other things, that's far away
from an acquisition and you can decide not to use it for now:

SInce few years I'm a huge fan (and supporter) of codeberg
(https://codeberg.org/) a real free alternative for hosting git
repositories.

After reading the link which Georg Krause provided this appears to just
be a way for people using Google Cloud services to have easier
integration between their code configuration on Gitlab and deploying
onto their Google Cloud instances.
Does not look to be of any concern to me, but of course anyone who for
whatever reason does not want to have any ties to any commercial
organization is always free to run their own git server.
I used this git server software for a while, anyone interested in
running your own server, or even supporting an independent git service
rather than one of the big two might find something

For free/libre software, the source-code is already out there. Short of
making some political statement, moving the repository does not make a
difference. Since git is decentralized you can push to any number of
remotes. In fact anyone can mirror any existing public git-repo.
So github, gitlab, gitea, sourceforge, bitbucket, etc are great to
mirror your git repository, provide backups and bandwidth free of charge.
Why jump ship when you can have a fleet :)

Git is decentralised but GitHub is not, Open-source infrastructure
is a definite plus not to suffer from lock-in (you don’t just have repos
there, but collaboration tools, issue tracker, CI, etc.). Plus there are
additional considerations to be had, e.g. GitHub partnering with OpenAI.

There was a case in the UK a few years ago where a guy announced to his social
media friends he was taking a month's holiday abroad. While he was away someone
was able to glean enough information to completely impersonate him and sell his
