Hi,
Are there any decent Reaktor/Synthedit-type apps available for Linux
yet?
(And easier to use than things like puredata, supercollider or csound.)

Ingen. It's really very good and easy to use. Comes with a good gui,
some example patches and a helpful user base. :) You can make
synths/filters/etc from a range of plugins.

Ingen. It's really very good and easy to use. Comes with a good gui,
some example patches and a helpful user base. :) You can make
synths/filters/etc from a range of plugins.

think you can create synth-like GUIs with it (with knobs/sliders etc.).
You might also like to check out Steven Yi's program called blue.
It's a
GUI for Csound that includes a synth construction kit complete with
knobs & sliders. Alas, your designs can't be exported as standalone
applications (yet).

If you value your time, you should better consider to write a
gui-builder for Ingen. Among the plus-points of Ingen are
- nested patches with sub-patches that are handled very similar to
plugin nodes
- Polyphony handling making it easy to build polyphonic synth patches.
- gui/engine separation. The engine is also meant to be embeddable
There might be a way to realise a gui-builder that is both useful for
Ingen patches and LV2 plugins.
Or you could pick up development of Galan instead of reinventing the
wheel.

I was thinking something similar reading this thread, but rather of
perhaps picking up where someone else left off or joining something in
progress. But in all truth, I'm more into Csound, and I have a hard
project going already...

About 99.9% of VSTs use knobs and sliders, and people seem pretty happy
with them (as I am).
I can't compile Ingen at the moment but if the GUIs are like the
screenshot on the home page (http://drobilla.net/software/ingen/) then I
don't think it is really suitable for ordinary users.
Anyway, I'm going to have a go at the GUI part of an app, as I want to
test out my canvas widget a bit. If it goes well I might add the audio
processing backend.

An OSC frontend It will give you exactly what you want. After you
compose a synth in ingen, you can write what ever style of frontend

engine mode ;) and your frontend connected to it and no one will know
it's not a stand alone app, just like synthedit.

you seriously expect this to work? if it did, you'd have violated
several expectations of what a real chroot'ed environment should offer.
why are you doing this? i don't mean to be rude, but this is a really
crazy way to test software.
