I also would be interested in results about ua 101 or fa 66.
I'm stuck for months on which of those or other ua/fa to buy. Or maybe
search some more to find a label that really cares for supporting
Linux, which by now I don't have any in mind.

and the UA-25, UA-25EX, UA-101 *seems* to be fairly well supported.
FA-66 and FA-101 *seems* supported too but you need to install

ffado is in the moment jack only ... but there is some development to
integrate ffado in a way that it also can provide alsa devices.
you should try if your firewire is working with ffado some people have
problems because of fw-chipsets and/or irq-sharing ... these problems
are not ffado/linux related but hardware problems.

I'm not sure yet if, from the linux/jack/etc point of view, it would
"better" (it is relative and also depends on what you need), or more
advisable to go for a UA or FA.
I've red and searched a lot about USB and Firewire audio interfaces,
and I think I can do a short list of some of the pros and cons
(correct me if I'n wrong):
* UA/USB:
Pros:
- portable (firewire is not so common yet, I only have one in my laptop),
- there are a lot of different audio devices.
Cons:
- some UA devices aren't fully supported (maybe some more since last
time I checked Alsa matrix) yet,
- no support for USB 2.0 audio standard from the
manufacturers->special alsa drivers for every audio interface

* UA/USB:
Pros:

- usb 3.0 is coming (maybe standard from the beginning)
Cons:
- some UA devices aren't fully supported (maybe some more since last
time I checked Alsa matrix) yet,
- no support for USB 2.0 audio standard from the
manufacturers->special alsa drivers for every audio interface
FA/Firewire:
Pros:
- fully supported at least Edirol FAs
- it seems that firewire protocol requires less processing and/or
resources from the computer
- cheaper than their equivalent in Usb
Cons:
- only jack support, not alsa (by what you write on last emails)
- Firewire is not as spreaded as Usb and Apple has the patent ($$)
Foreseeing I'll need more than 2 ins, and having just one firewire and
only in my laptop and not on my PC, it makes me balance to UA 101.
Any more advices and experience on linux?

Actually this should _really_ push you for firewire. Because:
USB1 only has bandwidth for four channels. Two in and two out and the bus is
filled up. And don't even think about adding another device to that bus (and be
aware of the hubs already builtin the computer).
On Firewire the bandwidths will be reserved, so no matter how many devices you
connect, (up to the total limit) all devices will get the needed bandwidth.
And firewire is a network, not a master-slave connection. So you don't need
more than one firewire connector on your laptop, simply daisy-chain all the
devices. Additional advantage: then they can all use the firewore-clock as
reference-clock which makes multiple audio-fw-devices act as one big (sample-
synced!) audio device.
And a firewire-card for a pc is as cheap as a good firewire cable...

I see.
So if I really need more than 2 ins/4 channels (USB1) I should go for
a FA. And now I wonder, given the feedback related to this in the
list, is it that is not so "good" the state of the art in alsa special
drivers for those UA 2.0 non standard interfaces with >=4ins? By now,
don't they provide similar functionalities?
The thing is that It makes totally sense to me what you say. I'm
really considering buying a FA.
It's just that I think the only real disadvantage for me is that I was
considering to get to a kind of recording mobile DAW (usefull for
recording at rehearsal places or gigs) with something like an EEE Pc
(similar idea to Ken's EEE 1000) or some other light, cheap and
portable netbook/portable, and they don't use to have firewire.

I can also confirm that the fa-66 works well at 192KHz/24bit, although I
normally run at 48KHz.
I don't think you can run without jackd, though...
