Hi all,
Any recommendations on a 6-channel USB soundcard that also possibly has a
preamp mic input or two on it? E.g. http://www.esi-audio.com/products/u46xl/
(but not sure if it is support by ALSA).

USB1/audio can't support that many channels.
USB2/audio on Linux .. I think you know the story.

Thanks all for the replies. I actually missed some of the earlier discussion
regarding this so if you don't mind summarizing what is exactly preventing
us at this point in time from having a better support of USB2 cards? Is it
simply that there is no particular standard and companies are not being open
to sharing the specs? It appears (at least AFAIK, based on tests) that
Edirol UA-1EX seems to be working fine (at least at 48KHz--is this perhaps
because it is being used in USB1 mode? It seems to me that the kernel loads
usb2 module), and certainly Edirol UA-101 is almost there in terms of
support (apart from the known sync issue, not sure about its MIDI support).

according to Clemens, the standard for audio over USB2 exists but
either none or very few devices implement it.
so far, the USB2 devices that have come out have their own per-device
drivers even on windows & linux.
Clemens indicated the other day that ALSA has no USB2 audio device
support yet, and that it being added is a chicken and egg situation -
no devices that use the spec, no reason to write drivers etc.

when I could test that card borrowing it from a friend for a while! I don't
know why it workd and if it translates to machines different from mine - but it
