I was noticing the Behringer DEQ2496 spectrum analyzer / EQ has a XLR
input for a mic with flat EQ to be connected for room analysis, and the
mic input does have phantom power supplied.
However, it says +15-volt phantom power. Fifteen volts? Isn't phantom
power normally 48 volts? I was hoping to use an Earthworks TC30K mic
with it, since I have two of them, and they are basically flat out to
beyond the human audio range, but they say they require 48-volts at
10mA. Where do you get 15-volt phantom power?

Interesting... But apparently this is not uncommon - see:

Seems. It has been designed primarily with behringer's measurement mic
in mind. Not reallly an appropriate mic amp/eq for a high end mic.

Also, the real provided voltage might be different from device to
device. I did measure an Allan and Heath desk and some digi-something
and they behaved quite differently. The digi provided the voltage
immediately after turning it on and quite exactly what you'd expect
while the a&h took a few minutes to reach the 48V and it climbed up
further. Notice that this was measured without any load, simply with a
voltmeter, so the reality might look different. However, I also doubt
that 2V off mean a lot to mics.

Well, ok...hrm. Their mic is cheap enough. I just figured since I've
already got a flat mic, it'd be nice to use it, but that's ok, I can get
theirs I suppose.
Just out of curiosity though, what would it take to provide the 48V/10mA
phantom power from somewhere else? Is it possible without more work
than it's worth?

There is a huge myth circulating that microphones sound better running from
48 volts, as opposed to, say, 12 volts, or that you can increase the dynamic
range of a microphone by using higher phantom power. *For the overwhelming
majority of microphones both of these beliefs are false. *Most condenser
microphones require phantom power in the range of 12-48 VDC, with many
extending the range to 9-52 VDC, leaving only a very few that actually
require just 48 VDC. The reason is that internally most designs use some
form of current source to drive a low voltage zener (usually 5 volts;
sometimes higher) which determines the polarization voltage and powers the
electronics. The significance is that neither runs off the raw phantom
power, they both are powered from a fixed and regulated low voltage source
inside the mic. Increasing the phantom power voltage is never seen by the
microphone element or electronics, it only increases the voltage across the
current source. *But there are exceptions, so check the manufacturer, and
don't make assumptions based on hearsay.*
I guess the special mic your using might *really* need the 48V, but who
knows... maybe email them?

Don't know about the voltage, but the Earthworks mics are notorious for
needing more current than most. Most condensers only need 1-2mA, but
the Earthworks really do need 10mA. I suppose it's probably safest just
to get Behringer's own cheap mic for this.

I am pretty sure a microphone needing _exactly_ 48V won't break when provided
with only 12V. So you can easily try it. And maybe it works because "48V
phantom power" in the datasheet means "some reasonable phantom power" in
real
live...
It would be a little risky if the device outputs significantly more then 48V.
