Ok haven't found the source of the problem, but I am able to successfully
mount CDs in my burner, but not in my DVD-ROM drive.
Still open to suggestions.

Luke, what does 'ls /dev/cdrom*' and 'ls /dev/dvd' report ?
How are trying to mount a disc in the DVD drive ?
