Hi all, I was wondering if you knew of a good alternative to Audacity.
For whatever reason I just don't like it. What is a fast, solid
sample editor? I liked mhwavedit but gave up on it because it seemed
to unstable.
Basically something like an Ardour jr. would be perfect. Is anybody
using SND for this purpose? It's got a high learning curve and I have
not seen much written about it online.

Rezound is good - the interface is much better than audacity IMO, and
it's pretty easy to use for single file (not multi-track) work. The only
problem is it's not actively maintained - no release since Jan 2007. So
you might have to compile your own. I think it's a really nice editor
though.

the NVIDIA MCP72XE/MCP72P/MCP78U/MCP78S High Definition Audio.
I know I should buy a more sophisticated card but boards like the
Terratec DMX6fire24/96 or M-Audio Delta 410 have prices here in Holland
which are way over the prices you pay (€189,00 is the cheapest).
Moreover I use it to edit using headphones as audio output for computers
is, in my opinion very bad or you use a pair of studio monitors (I use
Yamaha 60 W as output boxes for my E-piano for use in small rooms. As
I'm a jazz-pianist and people prefer to listen so you don't need
decibels to go over crowd noise!). But those are expensive.
My jack settings are:
/usr/bin/jackd -dalsa -dhw:0 -r44100 -p1024 -n2.

replacing the '-n2' with '-S -n3'. The '-p1024' should be able to

Sorry I didn't react sooner but I discovered yesterday evening that my
provider has forgotten to renew the ssl certificate for my maildomain
and as I use fetchmail with full check of ssl certificate it wouldn't
fetch my E-mail. And only this morning I found out what the problem was
and how to circumvent it and now my system is backing up several systems
(backuppc) and even this fast beast is running at 50% (on 4 cores) so I
don't think testing for XRUNS is useful.
As soon as this is complete, however, I wil try the given suggestions
and report back.
Of course I blame pulsaudio as I don't think that the simple commando
pulseaudio -k will really stop it and removing is a somewhat complicated
process. I also don't know if I have to install the special
short-latency patches as I think it is ridiculous that a system like
this can play without a problem video's with sound an image and the
simple playback of audio gives so many problems. I wonder if upgrading
to Lucy gives better audio performance.

Ardour has a search-window for Plugins in wich you can enter words like
"limiter" or "reverb" that will find most of the plugins that are
available for the tasks you request. If you like to have nice GUIs too,
try the LV2-versions of the plugins where available.
But at the moment my

Reading about you setup in the following mails in this thread I suggest:
/usr/bin/jackd -u -dalsa -dhw:0 -r48000 -p512 -n3 -Xseq
this works perfectly well for me with the very same audiochip and a
lesser machine.
Is your system set up for realtime?
Ubuntu uses a file in /etc/security/limits.d/audio.conf that holds the
following lines:
@audio - rtprio 99
@audio - memlock unlimited
without this file, your jack wont work as it can. You also have to add
your user to group audio.

This should not be neccessary.
As of now, killing pulseaudio does not work. PA should be suspended
automatically as jackd starts. This works, let us say: okayish for me.

an uncommon recommendation would be
cinelerra (http://cinelerra.org/)
it happily loads gigabytes of pcm data and is quite fast.
