Possibly not so much of a problem for those who've been using ALSA for a while, but when it's a struggle for someone used to a bit of tinkering, there's no chance for those who just want to plug in and get on with it :-( I got zero response to this on alsa-user list, so I guess I'll try alsa-devel...
