Hello. I would like to have a look at full set of PDF manuals
for the following software. They comes for my personal use only
as I'm collecting manuals of audio and graphics software and
as I'm helping to make free, open source software better.
Cakewalk / Sonar 1.0
Emagic / Logic Audio Platinum 6.0 + effect plugins docs
Steinberg / Nuendo 2.0
I have already asked Emagic for their manual but the manuals
were available for the product owners, which is sad if somebody
like me wants document the audio and graphics software history.

Why do you ask for docs of current versions of mainstream software (a
collector may be most interested in old and non-mainstream stuff). What
does this have to do with open source software?

I can see where they'd be useful for (a) making documentation with an eye
towards migrating users of those applications over to their free software
equivalents, and (b) documenting what features are and aren't available in
those equivalents to date. Since actually running the software isn't usually
an option for those of us running Linux, obtaining the manuals is kind of a
clever workaround for that.
I'm pretty sure if you look on the file sharing networks you'll find manuals
for most or all of these in PDF form, Juhana.

Hello. I don't have illegal copies of them and I don't do piracy
business. I develop free Linux software and follow the audio and
graphics industry. It is simple as that.
Indeed, when I asked Emagic for their manuals, I also asked
their Notator (~1988) manuals and suggested that they will
digitize them and place them freely available at their site.
Those manuals have historical interest. Did they do that? Nope.
I already have Logic Audio 1.5 and 4 manuals and various Steinberg
manuals if I remember correctly (and manuals, specs, tutorials of
a few tens of other software). It just is that I want keep up
with the latest ideas in the field. That is why I would like to
take a good look at the fresh manuals.
I'm developing my own software (audio and graphics editors, engines,
reverbs), but quite slowly. Most recently I have contributed to
Audacity. I have contributed my inventions to many open source
software, but they seem to need only code hackers, not inventors
like me.
OK. I help open source software, you help me, I help open source
software, you help me,... sounds fair enough?
By the way, thanks for the hint of using the manuals as rhough guides
for writing manuals for free software. Yet another reason to have
the manuals.
I don't distribute the manuals to anyone else. I move them
immediately to computer which don't have network aceess.

Hello again on the manuals topic. Very good opinions were
written to the lists, and I had to write this summary on why
the manuals are needed.
1. Historically important. If one collects the manuals today,
he does not have to search them with cats and dogs later.
2. Good for finding out the latest in industry.
3. Good for learning about audio and effects processing. Very good
documentation can be found, indeed.
4. Good for getting ideas for open source software.
5. Good for writing documentation for other software.
6. Good for making comparison charts. I actually started this job
a few weeks ago as somebody in Audacity list started writing his
comparison chart. We also had a discussion how transport buttons
should be arranged: a quick look at a few manuals revealed much.
7. Good to read before purchasing an expensive software.
8. Your favourite musicians are using the software. Well, I asked
Logic Audio manuals also because Boris Blank of Yello has used Logic
Audio products since Notator/Creator times. This is the same reason
why I asked Euphonix to send me their System 5 manual -- I got it.
This is the same reason why I have also asked Fairlight to digitize
their Series II and III manuals and place them available. (BTW, I also
suggested them to release a Series II and III software synth with the
original samples. Got no reply, sad.)
OK. I have collected urls of software manuals, at
"http://www.funet.fi/~kouhia/commercials.html",
but that list is already four years old. It does not contain
findings done since and documented to my private notes.
I would like to learn more about the "sharing networks" as that
seems to be the only way to get the manuals.

Nope. My favorite musician is Charlie Parker. He played alto saxophone
and died in 1955.

yep, that was some software he used.
next time time someone ask me for my favourite software i'll tell them the
one charlie parker used. and thelonious monk. and sonny rollins, lester
young, coleman hawkins, nat cole and clifford brown.
and duke ellington, of course.

taylor, eric dolphy, charles mingus and ornette coleman. all right, i said
