I've found a solution : Qsynth with loads of outputs with QMidiRoute re-arranging the notes onto different channels. As far as Hydrogen is concerned, it's great but the impression I get is that most of the sample sets around are sf2/gig. How about a conversion utility, sounds like somthing straight forward.
