Hello dear readers,
I wish to find the best way to play live on a MIDI keyboard with
softsynths and plugins in my linux notebook (avlinux or debian – or
another if someone knows a better one for this purpose) with a good USB
audio interface (komplete audio 6, which is running very well with jack1
(possibly changing to jack2))
Mostly I have to be able to switch between preconfigured sets of sounds
quickest and easy.
The topic is boundless. Therefore I ask you for some orientation.

had the same problem to solve this year to switch between different presets
using Pianoteq and setBfree as softsynths. After some testing I stuck with
MidiLayer. Unfortunately it seems to be abandoned and it does not work together
with Jack's MIDI ports so I have to use virmidi to create virtual midi
"hardware" ports to be able to connect Jack's ports to MidiLayer.
I compiled latest MidiLayer version from SourceForge without big problems (using
Mint BTW). You can send Program Change messages to ML and decide freely about
keyboard splits, note transpositions, which of up to 4 midi input streams goes
to which softsynth and which Program Change messages are to be send to the
individual softsynths.
From the Readme:
MidiLayer is a simple and easy to use application designed to enhance your live
performances.
Manage slots and channels, adjust the velocity and the volume, customize the
note range and connect with modulation wheels and other types of controllers,
all with the help of MidiLayer.
For sending the Program Change messages I created a small hardware device with
an Arduino like micro controller, push buttons and LCD display. This way, after
setting up all the programs by bash script I can close the lid of the laptop
during live performance. Any MIDI controller will be able to perform the same
task though.
I furthermore use jmess and jack_connect to create all the necessary conections
in qjackctl.

Thank you very much for your helpful and quick answer. Now I have to

I have been using carla with various software synths for s long time both
at home and live.
I have been using midi keyboards that has been easy to change midi channel
so my setup was aimed to change active synths based on midi channel.
In carla I route my keyboard or keyboards to midi filter and connect my
softsynths to one of the 16 outputs. If needed I chain the synths to
compressors or other plugins and route them to a physical output.
My regular setup consist of SetBfree on midi ch 1
Pianoteq on ch 2
Various U-he synths on ch 3 to 9
And a few sample libraries above that.
Some routes includes more than one synth and if needed the setup can filter
midi on note number as well and by so having layers and splits..
The downside with my setup is that it is aimed at maximum 16 sounds bit
that can be worked around by using program changes to expand. I could send
pgm changes to Pianoteq to change presets and the same goes for other
synths.
By using carla and all available midi filters there are no limitations
other than the imagination.

I use only one manual but I have used two for setBfree with this setup so
it is very easy to do.
I can have multiple mido-filters i carla and connect any amount of
keyboards to one carla instance so dual keyboards + footpedals + pedal
board are no problem.

Just curious, you are only using one manual or pedal at a time? e.g. not
splitting keyboard for using lower and upper manual simultaneously?

Hello Gerhard,
I think the way I would approach it is use a pd-l2ork patch. You can
route all midi into it, then use a patch that will change the midi
output when pressing a certain midi button. Then, you can route pd to
all of your synths that you want to use. You would be building your own
midi mixer.
I think the downsides to this approach is you need to know how to
program with pd to do this. However, the patch would be pretty simple:

You would just need to use as many spigots and midiouts as you need and
set the number of midi outputs you want to use in the preferences menu.
When you press a certain midi cc button, you could then send 1 to
whichever spigot you want to send out to, and send 0 to the rest of the
spigots. You would also want to send midi offs using |flush| when
changing instruments so you don't get "stuck" notes. If you want, I
could even make a small patch and send it to you if you are interested.
The upsides to this approach, is you have made a custom patch that can
be transformed for your own interests. You could even keep adding to the
patch to build your own midi arpeggiator or gui down the line if you
wanted to.

As midi cc button I would only have a middle grandpiano pedal to switch
to the next sound preset in a row of presets for let’s say a concert.
All other midi cc is only reachable by preessing at least two buttons
which is too much. And all of the 88 keys I need for playing. I would
prefer to touch a single key of my notebook to select a sound/preset.
I’m quite safe that could be done within pd.

that then cycles through each preset based on the number it goes to,
turning on and off spigots to route your midi data (while also sending
flush messages to stop any stuck notes).
