Just wondering...
If there is then is it supported in Ardour or any other apps? Jamin has
something called scenes which I do not understand yet, but it's not
LADSPA it's an app.

Yes, LADSPA allows for automation, I think it was a very important requirement
when LADSPA was crafted.
And yes, I think Ardour has it (though I haven't actually tried it), MusE will
have it in the next release, as for other hosts I don't know.
Some of the modular softsynths would probably allow for LADSPA automation by
using midi-controllers.
The scene selection in Jamin is not really related (though it probably affects
a few plugins under the hood).

I think that plugin automation is a work-in-progress. Scenes are
really simple. You can do setups for different portions of a song (i.e.
verse, chorus, lead...) or for different songs in a group and then
switch between them. At some point you should be able to use OSC to get
Ardour to tell JAMin when to switch scenes. Ron Parker is working on
getting this a bit more streamlined I believe.

ardour does support plugin automation. take the track that you have the effect on, click
on the 'a' button under the track name and it will let you do automation for any
parameter of a plugin. make sure you have aplay turned on when you play the track back too
=)

Thanks Andrew. I'm trying to get Ardour rebuild with fst_1.6. I'll give
it a try as soon as that's really working. (So far it isn't...)
I guess that LADSPA makes all parameters visible to an app like Ardour?
In Pro Tools it's a two step thing. You choose the plugin and choose
which parameters to allow automation on. Only then do they become
visible to Pro Tools.

I'm not sure exactly what automation means, and I know Mark was mainly
interested in ardour, but with ecasound there are a variety of controls
that can be connected to plugin parameters.
For instance, you can attach a sine oscillator to a filter's cutoff
frequency and then attach another oscillator to the frequency control of
the first.
There are generic oscillators that take a series of point-in-time and
value pairs. So you can create an arbitrary envelope for parameter
control.
plugin parameters can also be controlled via midi CCs. So, perhaps one
could record the CC's in a sequencer, have the sequencer output to a
virmidi device and have ecasound listen to the virmidi device for the CC
changes.
I imagine this is not what Mark is looking for, but just incase anyone
else is interested ... I use these things in scripts and really have a
lot of fun with it.
