[linux-audio-user] How broken are epia boards for use with ardour? (sorry if you've seen this message many times)

Hello there,
I am thinking about putting together a silent (or very near) machine for recording
classical guitar. I have this set up in mind and would like to use ardour (so that I can
do drop-ins etc) even though there is a don't use epia warning on the ardour
homepage:
epia m10k with a replacement fan (17db)
silverstone LG06 (silent PSU - fanless)
samsung spinpoint (apparently the quietest Hard Drive about)
512Mb ram
...and my trusty Terratec EWX2496
The main question is: I would only at maximum be multitracking 2 parts. Is the epia so bad
that it wouldn't be able to cope with that? (I have no idea what the link about the
epia on the ardour homepage is talking about so please have mercy in your replies.)
Otherwise, does anyone have any alternative suggestions about putting together a
good-as-silent machine for only a little cash? (this set-up with a DVD burner will set me
back around 350 pounds sterling not including the soundcard.)

There are fanless versions of this processor, there slightly slower, and
I've not used them so I'm not confident about the performance though. The
stock M10000 fan is pretty quiet.

Is that an external brick pwersupply? Those work well with DC-DC
converters to provide the ATX powerlines.

There really not that slow, you should be fine. I've used them at work and
I would guess that thier equivalent to a PIII 700, at least. Enough to run
ardour. For reference I used to run (and older version of) ardour on a
PIII 500. It limits the number of plugins oyu can run, but just recording
doesnt use that much CPU.
I've had good service from ultim8pc (http://www.ultim8pc.co.uk/) and quietpc
(http://www.quietpc.com/uk/) FWIW.

Well actually it's a "Don't use VIA chipsets" warning. I think this is
overblown. There was one VIA chipset that was known to cause problwms,
the KT-266 (?). I use an EPIA M-6000, works fine.

Yup, I have one of those too and never had a problem with it. Maybe
these are problematic under Windows but all of mine work fine.

I think these warnings are seldom specific enough. For instance, back
in about 1995, when Intel was first getting into the chipset business,
they made some chipsets with bugs. (Saturn/Neptune anyone?) Via did
it. SiS did it. Compaq did it. If someone had an earlier chipset, or
one of the first chipsets from any company, then they are more likely
to run into this.
Here I sit typing on a machine that has an ATI chipset. First one I've
owned, or even knew about. Until 2.6.3 I couldn't get DMA for the hard
drives. I still cannot set time when booting and must use ntpd to get
the clock set. Hardware has bugs. (I'm a hardware designer by
trade...)
And I use both KT-266 and KT-133 chipsets. They
work fine for me....

And I've used a KT266, replaced with a KT333 when it died, without
problems.
