Hi all
I have two files, file reports the following on them:
RIFF (little-endian) data, WAVE audio, mono 44100 Hz
RIFF (little-endian) data, WAVE audio, Microsoft PCM, 16 bit, mono 44100 Hz
How can I convert the first to something that has the "Microsoft PCM, 16
bit"-part in file's output? Sox always seems to output the former...
NB: It's for input into another program that is very picky with it's
file type, so far it seems that only files with "Microsoft PCM..." works.

PCM is an encoding often used in *.wav files.

Try to encode with libsndfile:
(ubuntu:)
apt-get install sndfile-programs libsndfile1
sndfile-convert --help
shows different options, as -pcm16 etc.

If you have ecasound installed, I'm pretty sure it outputs that
format
by default, so:
$ ecasound -f:16,1,44100 -i:oldfile.wav -o:newfile.wav
...Should do it.

Thanks, in the meantime I found that mplayer outputs "Microsoft PCM"

If you wish to generate one of these using libsndfile, use the SF_FORMAT_WAVEX

Ok, thanks for looking into this. I feel the horrors of video codexes
and containers crawling up on me. Until yesterday a wav was a was for me...
