Hi there,
It is a kind of OT, but I couldn't find any useful information, and
I already wasted half a day on this problem, so I thought someone here
would be able to help me.
It seems like my partition table is messed up, and I am not able to
mount all my partitions. For example, mount refuse to mount /dev/hda12
on any directory: when I do a mount -r /dev/hda12 /mnt/tmp, mount tells
me that hda12 is already mounted, or that /mnt/tmp is busy. The
partition is not mounted for sure, and I tried several other tempory
locations, without any success. The "funny" part is that a fsck.ext3
/dev/hda12 doesn't give me any error when I check the filesystem (which
let me some hope about the possible recovery).
Basically, I think the problem is only coming from a wrong partition
table, but I don't know how to recover the good beginning/end of the
partitions (the partitions used for the OS itself seem OK, my linux is
works flawlessly, "only" my last data partitions are not accessible
anymore). All my partitions are ext3.

Is your point that if you know the beginning and end
of hda12 you could write a new table and without
formating mount it and find the data in place? I
think that's possible but how do you find those
locations, I haven't a clue. I believe this is
something I did once but it's been a long time and I
can't recall much. Sorry! I'm sure someone here will
have a much better clue than my pitiful last resort
and vague at best idea. Best of luck.

Hi David,
Maybe worth checking the output of the following commands:
$ df
and
$ fdisk -l /dev/hda
and for good measure look for errors in /etc/fstab
Use *cfdisk* if you need to adjust your partition table.
You would have to be 7334 h@x0r to screw up a partition table
using cfdisk.
I can remember once confusing disks and deleting a partition
on the wrong disk. Recreating it with exactly the same
length as the original and the ext2 filesystem popped right
back up.
That is a good argument for printing out a hard copy of all
partition tables.

You might try using an alternate superblock. Check the man page on
mount (sb option).

One thing no one else mentioned that you might want to check is that
/etc/mtab is up-to-date (it's a plain text file that you can cat). If
there is an entry in there for a partition that isn't mounted, the mount
command still won't let you mount it.

Have you tried booting off a live cd (like Knoppix) and accessing the
partition from there?

You might want to check out gpart to guess partition beginning/end
boundaries. In worst case, you might try an "mke2fs -S" followed by an
e2fsck in that drive (chances are you get some data off this one). But
overally I don't really think this is an issue caused by a broken
partition table. How does cfdisk see the drive in question?

I think it is a partition table problem because I had the problems after
having modified it through cfdisk. And the weird thing is that I could
check the fs on the partition (a forced check didn't give any errors).
In fact, now that my problem is solved, I think I forgot to reboot after
having modified the partition table; worse, I built a filesystem on the
modified partition before rebooting, maybe a 40 Gb fs on a 2 Gb partition !
I didn't know how to use gpart on the extended partition.
What I did is just removing all the partitions from the partition table,
and set the partitions where I knew the beginning/end. It worked, and I
quickly copied all data on an external hard drive before reformating the
partitions where the fs size and the partition size were different.
