Greetings:
While waiting for another box I decided to pull the RAM and test each
stick (256 MB each). The problem occurred with either stick. I'm able to
log in, work for a few minutes, then the box just freezes. I can hear
the disk drive make a little activity noise first, then everything's
just gone. Btw, it'll die in X or at the console, it's not an X problem
(I think). And since the problem occurs whether I'm on /dev/hda or
/dev/hdb I doubt if both disk drives are bad.
Anyway, Ivy's bringing over the other machine in another day or so,
I'll switch drives into that machine and see what happens next.

Just a passing thought Dave, but have you thought of checking that the cmos
battery is ok?

Hi Dave. I apologise it you've received this twice. I'm not on the dev list,
and had it thrown back. Have you checked the cmos battery. It can throw up
some weird stuff if it's on the way out. Nigel.

Dave, have you checked the CPU temp? I know you swapped out the fan,
but this sort of gradual death is a lot like machines I've had that
failed due to heat.
Use gkrellm if you have X up to get a read on the temp, or look in the
BIOS after a reboot.

Hi,

I know this effect from the time when I installed SuSE 9.1 on
my dell inspiron. I guess it was related to something like
ACPI. As I didn't find a matching kernel parameter, I
installed another Distro and at least this problem was
gone ;-) .
Maybe building a kernel of your own could be helpful. I'm
really happy with my custom vanilla 2.6.10 with some RT
patches.
