Greetings:
I'd like to start learning more about emacs, and the Xemacs package
has been recommended. I've installed it without problems, but I have
some questions for an experienced user. Can anyone on this list help out
? I'm especially interested in using it with Common Music and Csound.

I've used GNU emacs for about 20 years and xemacs for the last four or
five. They're both pretty similar, but I like xemacs better for use
with X.
It's the greatest program ever written, IMHO. :-)

That's a rather old version. My Debian woody distribution includes
xemacs 21.4.6-8, which is hardly recent. I'd recommened installing
xemacs version 21. I'm not a Red Hat user, but a quick google seems
to indicate that rpmfind has xemacs 21 packages for RH 7.2.
Btw, maybe we should go off-list with this thread ?

If you keep mentioning vi in a thread that is about (x)Emacs without
adding any constructive comment (such as VIM has a csound mode) you
are definitely not "participating" in the thread. Please let these
people discuss using (x)Emacs without trying to provoke a flamewar.

Very cool, they've made my life with Csound much more enjoyable.
But fear not, I'm hardly converted. At this point I can do some very

Where do I run helptags ? I tried it from within vi but got an error.
Btw, I've placed your csound.txt file in /usr/local/vim/doc, is that
correct ?

istvan also has fairly up-to-date csound syntax highlighting files for
vim up at http://www.csounds.com/istvan.

If I understand Dave well, he wants to run CommonMusic and Csound. While there's a
vim mode for editing Csound .orc & .sco files, I have not heard of embedded lisp
listener available (please correct me if I'm wrong). CommonMusic comes with with a
lisp listener that works with Xemacs (and not plain emacs). I'm quite sure that if
you can hack something like that in vim we'll stop everything else. BTW, I use both.
Dave, I don't use emacs for Csound but I got CM working from within Xemacs simply by
following the installation procedure outlined in: cm-2.4.0/etc/xemacs/listener.el. Are
you having problems with that? Posting the errors you get might point us in the right
direction. (Actually, the emacs gurus will pointed in the right direction because I have
only a few months of more _serious_ use).

The installation instruction of csound-x suggests to add
(require 'stef-elisp)
Unfortunately, this didn't work for me (had some problem with some
sub-package, if I recall correctly, its month ago). However, I changed
it to:
(autoload 'csound-orc-mode "csound-orc"
"Csound Orchestra major mode." t)
(autoload 'csound-sco-mode "csound-sco"
"Csound Score major mode." t)
These two expressions have the effect that the appropriate mode is
loaded whenever you open a csound file (a file with one of the
extentions declared above) the first time in your emacs session.
BTW, other emacs modi (e.g. the csound mode of John ffitch) can be
installed in a similar way.

It also has a dependency on calc which does not compile/run out of the
box on the latest emacs versions. I found it difficult to get running
and would also recommend using the simpler mode.

Actually, I'm primarily a vim user, but I would like to know more about
emacs in a particular setting, viz. the Common family of sound & music
apps from CCRMA at Stanford. I'm getting further into Common Music, and
since the environment is Lisp I figured it's time to learn more about
emacs. What little I've learned so far has already enabled me to stay
within a single environment for editing, compiling, and running my CM
files. It's very cool.
No fear, I'll probably stay with vim forever. I write everything with
it, it's truly a godsend for a professional writer. But my quest for
knowledge drives me onward into dark and dangerous realms... ;)
