Coming from a windows setup, I'm familiar with Cubase, CakeWalk, GigaSampler,
Fruity Loops, and the like. Are there any similar apps for linux??

Hello!
There are kind of similar apps. There is ardour the multitrack
hardidsik-recording software. This is pretty mature I'd say, although there's
still something to be done. Then there is muse. I thyink this is mostly for
midi-recording, but there are audio-facilities too. I think, that in the field
of software samplers,m there is not much. As I'm not a user of a GUI I can't
tell you anything about it. Only this, one project is on the way. But I
haven't checked the status lately. It's the linux-sampler project. If you're
looking for a GOOD and neat collection of sound-apps under linux visit:

There you'll find nearly all existing apps, organised in categories. Have a

Cinelerra works well now and is really nice for multi-tracking, Ardour is
good, too, and has jack support so you can record the output of other
jack programs onto ardour audio tracks.

synth for sample based playing.
There is nothing like Fruity Loops, I guess. But if you could provide
some more info on how you work and what you look for exactly, we
probably could name alternatives. If you're willing to learn them,
jMax or Pure Data are worth a deep look, because you can build your
own personalized sound software with them ... if you have patience.

I have released (today) a new version of Hydrogen drum machine, is not a
fruity loops clone but should be similar.. ;)

Not really.
But there are some apps that can do similar things in different
ways, and some that might one day be somewhat similar.
Rosegarden-4 (http://www.all-day-breakfast.com/rosegarden/ -- the
project I work on) and MusE are "somewhat like" Cubase in that
they're MIDI/audio sequencers with various editing modes. Swami
is a nice SoundFont editor, FluidSynth a nice SoundFont synthesizer
that integrates with it, together they make up a nice sample-based
synth management system. Hydrogen is a rather cool software drum
machine. Ardour is a rather serious multitrack audio recorder.
All of the above can talk to one another: you can power Hydrogen
and FluidSynth from Rosegarden-4, feed audio back into Rosegarden
or record the results using Ardour, and so on. And most of these
apps support the LADSPA plugin architecture.
Actually setting all that up and keeping it working can be quite a
challenge at the moment, but the foundations are pretty impressive.
