I am letting out a huge mad scientist laugh right now.
I had a suspicion that a big part of the Hammond B3 sound is the resonance of the wood in
the speaker cabinet. Particularly down in the lower registers, or when the crosstalk from
the 16' is audible. It sounds like the wood gives that extra "thump" on the
attack.
So I grabbed my EEE with a copy of Aliki, and made my way to a studio with a Leslie and
some nice mics and outboard gear. And I captured some impulses of the Leslie.
Then I ran the impulse in JCONV, and ran Beatrix thorugh that:

And it turns out, I was right. The percussive sounds are indeed caused by the wood
resonating. Except there is no wood. Every noise you hear there is coming out of an EEE
running Linux. There is no actual Leslie. It's a convolution reverb.

in the tarball, and also a sample JCONV conf file for using them.
I'd imagine that not only Beatrix, but also AZR-3, or any other organ emulator, even
an FM synth, would sound pretty good through Leslie impulses too.

Ken, thanks for the holiday gift item. :)
Me, I'm going to run my guitar through it. IIRC in Cream's Badge during
the lead the rhythm guitar plays through a Leslie. We used to do that on
a few songs, back in the day when I was young enough to move a B3 *and*
the Leslie cabinet.
Now I'd probably complain about the size of the EEE and why don't we
have roadies for that work. ;)

There are a couple Cream songs with Leslie. This convolution only gives the
"wood" sound, and doesn't do the "whirling". But, there's a
LADSPA plugin that does a pretty good Leslie whirling Doppler, so maybe experiment with
running the plugin before or after the convolution.
Also, note that the convolution outputs 4 channels. You'll need to mix them somehow;
in my demo I just sent channels 1 and 4 to the left side, and 2 and 3 to the right side.
Now I'd probably complain about the size of the EEE and why don't we
have roadies for that work. ;)

My B3 now fits in a backpack, along with a 1923 Steinway grand piano, not to mention a
Fender Rhodes suitcase 73 and a Rhodes 88 stage. I can take all this on a bike, to the
beach, or hiking in the hills.

When I was on the road in the late 80s our keyboardist played a rig made
up of a B3, a Rhodes, an Arp string synthesizer, and MiniMoog. I'm not
sure any part of that rig would fit in a backpack. We manouvered that B3
around corners and into spots you wouldn't have believed could
accommodate the thing. I hated moving it, but the sound was just tout
sweet.
I don't know for sure that God plays a B3, but I have it on good
authority that he keeps Jimmy Smith on call.

The Leslie was the old wooden kind-- I don't know the model number exactly-- and it
was indeed in the corner of the room. It was noisy too, and the impulses picked that up.
The room mic was in the opposite corner, diagonal from the Leslie,and flown way up high in
the corner near the ceiling. The "back" of the cabinet was facing into the room,
as is commonly done live, with the horns, drum, motor, and amp/tubes all facing into the
room. It was in the room they use for tracking, so it was well-insulated and fairly
"dead".
I don't know the mics, but the horn mics and room mic were nice, expensive condensers
(not Oktava's but something similar). I don't recall what the mic was on the drum
speaker. This was in a professional studio, and I just instructed the engineer to set it
up as he would normally do for a recording session. That meant putting the mics through a
tube compressor as well. He thought what I was doing was a little bit crazy, but he was
certainly curious about it.
Since I was paying by the hour, and I don't have a lot of money, and I wasn't sure
if this'd even work, I kept it to a one-hour session, and just moved through the
samples as quickly as I could, so I'm sorry about the lack of precision or
documentation.

I just downloaded your impulse responses and they rock! I just put them on a
simple organ patch from my synth and there's something there, that was missing
before. It is like a bit of wooden resonance, a more bassy and warm quality to
the sound! Thank you for doing this!

But the example leslie.conf uses also the naming *.wav
I've never seen or used *.wv before. I think there is something wrong in
the tarball...

wv is simply the ending for wavpack, a lossless compression format. You
might need to decode to .wav.

known it wasn't the real thing.
... thinking about it I guess you should add a touch of white noise and
just a sniff of 50/60Hz hum :D
