Hello everybody,
Here are two music pieces that I have composed using Linux:
- Variations d'Automne

- To Hope

The lossless FLACs are available on my homepage:

I've used the following programs:
- Jack
- Rosegarden
- Ardour
- LADSPA + various plugins
- Lilypond
In addition, for To Hope, I have recorded each singer separately, and then
adjusted the pitches using a custom-made Qt4 GUI over Praat
(http://www.fon.hum.uva.nl/praat/). Thanks to this trick, singing is in-tune
in To Hope, event though the piece was difficult to sing and the singers were
amateurs. To ensure temporal synchronisation, singers were listening to their
voices in a headphone while singing. However, I still had to adjust
synchronisation a lot using Ardour. If anyone is interested in the Qt4 GUI
over Praat, I'll be happy to release it as open source, but be warned that it
is currently very custom-tailored to my need, not particularly clean, and not
commented.

the four voices tune is lovely. i'd like to hear this in a nice ambience
without pitch doctoring at some point! especially the soprano has
audible artefacts.
(btw, goes to show why parallel fifths were frowned upon in the old days
- i sure love their sound, they stand out like a lighthouse, but they
are sooo hard to hit properly)
i think it could do with a little more slack, more in a madrigal style
of taking each sentence on its own, with slight tempo changes and short
cesuras.
the piano piece made me grin as i read along - you've certainly taken a
page out of charles ives' book by using many enharmonic changes of flats
and sharps that sound totally different from what they look like :)
keeps the pianist alert!
thanks for publishing those beautiful scores along with the music.
that's the open source spirit :)

Joern is right, the artifacts are clearly audible here too, but I'm not
sure how you'd go about minimizing them. Do they result from the pitch
correction ?

Yes, but the soprano has a light voice that doesn't sound a lot, even without
correction. That doesn't help when doing correction. For instance, the bass is
corrected as much as the soprano, but this results in less artefacts. I do not
know whether this is due to the more intense timber of the bass or the lower
frequency, when compared with the soprano.
When doing the mixing, it was difficult to place the voice in such way that they
all blend well together, as the singers have very different timbers.
If someone is interested, I can provide the Ardour mixing project.

I enjoyed these two very much, but it is a great shame you had to use
pitch correction on 'Hope'. I know how hard it is for amateurs to
sing accurately (self included) but personally I think I would have
preferred slightly off-tune singing.
