Some questions, for purposes of general knowledge:
1. How can the version of the currently running AlSA driver be determined?
2. With multiple soundcards, how can a playback device be specified with aplay? With
mplayer, xmms, or other apps?
3. With a multi channel device, can multiple instances of mplayer use specific outputs?
How can this be assigned?

cat /proc/asound/version

aplay : "man aplay" and see the -D option
xmms : via the Options->Preferences dialog.

for this you need .asoundrc magic to split the multichannel device into
stereo [or whatever] pairs. But usually the professional multichannel
devices allow only one app, so a mixed treatment using dmix is needed.
