I want to build a small home studio. I'm planing to record
electrical and acoustical instruments (including voice).
I already do have an external mixer (with mic preamplifiers).
I do need MIDI and (maybe) SPDIF I/O.
While I do think that about 6 analog inputs will do, I know
that some more could become handy some day...
Looking around in the net I have got the impression that both
RME Hammerfall (PCI Interface + Multiface) and the Midiman Delta 1010
would be good (but expensive) choices and about equally supported
in Linux.
Do you think that these cards would be comparable regarding quality
and Linux compatibility? Are there other suggestions to consider?
I have seen some complaints about RME MIDI timing problems, but I
do not think it was the PCI Interface + Multiface combination.
Is that right?
BTW: how long is the cable between PC and Midiman Delta 1010?
How is the collaboration between M-audio/RME and the free software
community? (we should honour this ;-)
I know websites for Linux printer recomandations and such, but did
not find something similar for sound equipment. Pointers welcome.

You can try with Delta 1010LT which is approx 4000 US$. That is very good
card with many good features and it is not too much expensive.

Just a note: The 1010LT is about 400 US$, not 4000.
The difference is that the LT has a bunch of RCA connectors hanging off
the back of the card, the 1010 has a very nice patch panel with 1/4"
jacks.

First of all:
Thanks a lot for the responses I got on the list and by PM.
The links sent to me kept me busy some days ;-)
I have received (very positive) reactions regarding M-Audio Delta 1010,
but nowbody talked about RME Hammerfall cards. Is this just an accident
or do this cards have any drawbacks (i.e. regarding Linux support) that
I should know of?
The combination of a PCI (DSP) card and the Hammerfall Multiface looks
interesting to me. How is it running under Linux?
One of the qualities that let's me consider it (beside M-Audio Delta 1010)
is the possibility to use a loooong (firewire) cable, so I could put the
(noisy) computer in another room to record low level acoustic stuff.
