Hello all,
Kevin E. helped me out with my HDSP. Turns out I just needed the new 0.9.6 drivers (sure
took some work to get them up and running, though - thanks, Kevin). Works great now, with
hdspmixer and everything (LOOKS great, too!).... but one weird thing happens - when I run
aplay or play, when it gets to the end of the file something happens and then no programs
can access the soundcard. Something similar happens on windows, but I don't know
what's causing it. Any ideas?

Matt,
When you finish using aplay, is it gone from the process stack when you
do a ps aux? If not, it is probably blocking other apps from getting to the
sound card. If it is gone, then I don't have any idea what's going on.

fresh batch of ALSA rpm's, made from CVS yesterday, I called them
0.9.6.cvs (the cvs date is in the spec). Anyway, once we got those

CVS.

The status of my setup right now is, I'm going through the planet ccrma steps,
and have done them all. all seems well, except for no sound test was heard
upon exiting alsaconf (this didn't worry me), and aplay didn't play back
anything. so I tried some other apps, including hydrogen, and ardour.
things that were playing back before I switched soundcards and some other
hardware and did a full reinstall of red hat 9. those apps run along
happily, but no output anywhere. I'm using a hdsp 9652, no multiface. I'm
running the optical outputs to a Behringer DDX3216 digital mix console. I
know the optical ins work there, because I did some mixing using that and a
darwin (with ADAT light pipe card)...
for a newbie like me, is there some sort of step by step somewhere that I
should go through first? (I plan documenting my steps just in case there's
not). It seems that with this card, there are steps missing from the planet
ccrma instructions - is this right?
ps:
there is a drivers CD included with the card - it has a linux directory, but
they appear to be OSS drivers - I was planning to avoid them, since my whole
goal is an ardour system, and that will have to use alsa. am I right to do
this?

In this case you do want the patch, as far as my experience goes. Make
sure you are on firmware revision 65. You'll have to figure out how to
get it applied to the Alsa source code tree that Fernando supplies
though. That's beyond me.

Planet CCRMA Alsa rpm. It doesn't have anything to do with the
instructions. It's just that Alsa doesn't have all the stuff you need
yet.
I'm sure that's disappointing. All I can offer is that I waited 5 months
to get it working, and switched this box to Gentoo to make building from
source more accessible for me. The Planet flow doesn't really work that
way, unless you can build your own RPMs, or unless Kevin's RPM will work
for you and not upset Fernando's flow.
I'm sure Fernando will get you something pretty soon.

Yes, avoid them. Stick with firmware rev 65, Alsa 0.9.6 + patch &

Not THAT disappointing, as I want to learn as much as I can, as well. So
any time something goes right, I love it because I can move forward, and
anytime it doesn't, I love it because I'm trying to learn. In fact I'm
thinking of working this project into a new degree program. :)
I'll go forward, and try and get it humming. Fernando will probably beat me
to the punch *laugh*
I'm not averse to anything, even writing code. Writing code will be a HUGE
stretch, as I haven't programmed anything since first year CS courses in -

for HDSP 9652, rev 101, we would really like to
know if this has been tested running continuously
for a day or more, with a CPU-intensive application
such as PD with a big patch.
The experience we have had, trying to make this work
for about half a year now with previous drivers and
versions of firmware, is that the whole machine
freezes totally after a few hours of operation, which
is disastrous for us. All kinds of kernels, drivers,
motherboards, BIOS settings etc. give the same problem -
believe me we have tried absolutely everything.
So, has long-term stability at relatively high CPU
loads (30-40%) and substantial disk activity been tested
for the new driver and 101 firmware? We are happy to
accept xruns and whatever, as long as the machine doesn't
crash!

My Linux system that uses the HDSP 9652 has turned out to be a much
different usage model than what I thought it was going to be when I bought
the card. Like you, I envisioned that I would be using lots of Linux apps
and using lots of compute cycles. For me this hasn't been the case as the
apps cannot yet replace the Windows apps I use today. (I remain vigilant and
will pounce when they can!) In my project studio environment the card is
primarily an audio router hooking together a number other computers and
hardware:

Sometimes the GigaStudio machine runs Planet CCRMA Redhat and I use Linux
apps there.
In the above configuration the primary job of the HDSP 9652 is to route
audio from machine to machine. All of this can be done in the HDSP card
itself. I do not even have to run Jack to make this part work. At this point
the machine is very stable. This has been up for about a month (since Thomas
got the driver operating) and has run for many hours at a time without a
crash I would associate with anything audio oriented. However, this only
uses about 1% of the CPU and requires no disk access.
I do, however, run Jack and some Jack apps mostly as processors for audio
coming from the other PCs and hardware, as well as a couple of Linux soft
synths. (ZynAdSubFX and amSynth) I want very much to do some work with AMS
and SSM but haven't had the time.
I'd be very interested in trying PD with whatever patches you might want to
use as a test. I know very little about PD and would be interested in
learning more, as well as seeing what reliability issues might arise. I'm
good at debugging hardware related stuff, but not so good at Linux software,
so there would likely be considerable interaction if we did this.

CVS Means Concurrent Versions System.

Unlike the simpler systems, CVS does not just operate on one
file at a time or one directory at a time, but operates on
hierarchical collections of directories consisting of version
controlled files. CVS helps to manage releases and to control
the concurrent editing of source files among multiple authors.
CVS allows triggers to enable/log/control various operations and works
well over a wide area network.
Type: man cvs for more information.
With CVS you can get from a remote server just those files that have
been updated lately so your local source code copy will be up to date.

To make tings clear, here's the status of the driver :
* Alsa 0.9.6 :
Multiface and Digiface work, except for rev 0x32 pci cards (once again
the patch to make those card work is trivial).
Hdsp 9652 is broken
Hdsp 9632 is unimplemented
* Alsa cvs :
Rev 0x32 mf/df are supported
Hdsp 9652 still broken
Hdsp 9632 still unimplemented
* Not even in cvs :
Multiface, Digiface (all firmwre revisions) and hdsp 9652 (rev. 101 at
least) are supported (patch posted on alsa-dev)
Hdsp 9632 is supported.
BUT the hwdep ioctl interface has changed hence this version is
incompatible with the current hdspmixer and hdspconf. I have working
versions for mf/df and 9652 but I still have to add hdsp 9632 support to
those tools. I hope to find the time to to this by the end of the week,
and bring all this to cvs.

No, I don't they are that out of date actually. If you add Thomas's
patch then Planet users would get HDSP 9652 support. If you packaged
hdspmixer rev 1.3 somewhere, then HDSP 9652 Planet user would get a
mixer. That's a nice step forward
What you do *not* get with the patch is a solution for HDSP 9632 users,
of which I believe you have at least one. A solution for that should be
in CVS at week's end, whenever that is, if Thomas manages to get it
done.
I think you should wait for that as it's really only a few days away,
unless Thomas pops up and says he's not going to get that into CVS then,
or on whatever time schedule you want to apply that patch, etc.
My only issue with this work Thomas is doing is that it will a new
version of the code that I haven't tested (as far as I know) and there
may be some debug that comes up, where as Alsa 0.9.6 + the patch I've
been using for a month now.
Unless I'm needed for something, I'm going to check out of this thread
now as it's about a Planet RPM which I won't be able to use since this
card is under Gentoo for me. (I'll probably check back in on the Planet
side about the little Hammerfall Light driver bug I found though...) ;-)

Creating new rpms with a patch is not too difficult
but I really really
don't have the time right now for a tutorial... [back to trying to
release the latest kernel and alsa packages]
your time definitely seems better spent developing than writing tutorials -
I'm planning at LEAST on documenting the steps I took, once I get humming,
and hopefully I can generalize enough to add something to the general
knowledge base. after that if I'm not too swamped to handle it, perhaps I
can do some good tutorials (I dunno that may be a longer term goal than I
think)
I'll definitely eventually figure out the patch - then again, it looks like
you're gonna beat me and add it in :) (I already said that in an earlier
post)
in any case thanks tremendously!
I'll be back at it tommorrow, and I promise I won't ask another question
until some sort of progress brings one up! :)

Don't mess with it. Just stick with the Planet CCRMA flow. Fernando
will update Alsa from CVS as soon as the patch is committed. For now the
patch is in a testing phase, and I'm not even sure that it effects your
hardware. I needed it because I'm one of a very using using the HDSP
9652, and for me it's critical. I've got two boxes - Gentoo with this
card and a Planet box with a Hammerfall - in case you're confused about
why I'm saying all of this.

I think they are ALSA rpms on http://freshrpms.net , but if you want the
best resource for Linux audio/music on Red Hat (supported versions are 7.3,
8.0 and 9.0) you surely have to check out PlanetCCRMA:
http://www-ccrma.stanford.edu/planetccrma/software/
The latest version of ALSA is included, along with a low-latency patched
kernel and a ton of applications, all easily fetchable/upgradable via
apt-get and very well documented.
They also have iso images if you don't have a decent connection handy.
I'll never thank enough Fernando (the guy who is behind this wonderful
project) for giving us such a useful resource.
