Greetings:
Yesterday I wanted to practice with a metronome, so I decided to
download one of the listings from the Linux Soundapps pages. Alas, I got
no joy:
1. cmetronome's server is unavailable
2. gTick wants to use /dev/sequencer and isn't working for me with ALSA
0.9.0beta10
3. gMetronome is a visual-only metronome and I need sound
So I went looking for something else. I found Metronome on SourceForge,
but its based on gTick and suffers the same poor output. I also found
DiffM, a Java-based metronome that is said to work under Linux, but the
available package only works with MacOS. So I still don't have a
metronome, and I don't feel like compiling Ardour just to use it as a
practice amenity. So, does anyone have a lead to a working software
metronome for Linux ? Does anyone have the sources to cmetronome ? Or is
anyone interested in writing a simple metronome application ?

There is one for jack, in the jack exmaple-clients, jack_metro. I've never
tried it.

Thanks, Steve, I checked it out. Here's what happened:
I ran 'jackd -v -d alsa -d hw:0 -r 44100' to start Jack.
Then I started 'jack_metro -f 440 -A .5 -D 100 --bpm 120'. It seems to
start fine, but there's no sound. I'm sure I'm missing something, so if
anyone knows how to make this work please let me know.

I think you need to connect jack_metro output to alsa_pcm:playback_*.
You can use qjackconnect or jack_connect:
$ jack_connect metro:120_bpm alsa_pcm:playback_1
will output metronome on your first alsa channel.

You have to connect it to the alsa_pcm_playback ports of JACK using a
patchbay, e.g. QJackConnect.

No hack necessary. From the "Examples" page under
effect and LADSPA plugins in ecasound:
ecasound -i:null -o:/dev/dsp -el:sine_fcac,880,1
-eemb:120,10 -efl:2000
This results in audible metrome signal with
tempo of 120BPM. Now the syntax might look a bit
difficult for everyday use. Luckily ecasound's preset
system will help in this situation. You can get the
same exact result with:
ecasound -i:null -o:/dev/dsp -pn:metronome,120
See the file 'effect_presets' for a list of
available effect presets. By default, location of this
file is '/usr/local/share/ecasound/effect_presets'.

Well, that sounds like a cool little project for JavaSound, which is
finally (with the help of the new tritonus jars) getting decent enough to
be usable under linux. I'm swamped with work today, but that sounds like
something fun to do this weekend.
Usually I use a sequencer metronome, the one in Jazz++ is good, but a
standalone metronome would be better.

RhythmLab works great for me. (at least it used to, haved practised with
it for half a year now...)
i found it on the (very nice indeed) sound apps page of one dave philips

I tried to do a bit of tracking last night with ardour... had some success...
for a click track I used jack/example-clients/jack_metro.
It works quite nicely, and you can configure the click sound to
your liking.

Thanks for the tip, Joern, I'll check it today.
And thanks to everyone else who responded. It now looks like we'll get
one or two new metronome apps out of this short discussion too.
Btw, I wound up using jack_metro, it worked fine. However, its timing
was a bit shaky when I ran it as normal user. It's better as root.
PS: Joern, please note that I'm not currently listening to Hildegard...
