Thank you all so much for your input! The information is really
appreciated. Sorry to be vague and lead us off onto mics (although that info
too was much appreciated.) I'll be recording a wide range of things (taiko
drums, stringed instruments, singing, found sound) so will eventually need a
number of microphones. Right now I've only got a Shure SM57 due to lack of
funds. Hopefully this will change. :)
I'm glad to hear that people think a setup or something similar would do the
trick. Brian brought up the Midiman soundcard, saying it's easy to setup.
And I'm always happy to support companies who put a Penguin on their box. RME
has been a little stand-offish.
Does anyone have any thoughts about the Hammerfall card vs the Midiman card?
It looks to me like the Hammerfall card is a little more high end but if you
have an external AD/DA converter, maybe it doesn't matter? Maybe ease of
setup is more important than the few extra bells and whistles? I'll admit
that I don't know what a lot of the specs mean for either card. Paul Davis of
Ardour fame strongly recommended the Hammerfall cards but listening to Brian's
music at his homepage, it sounds like he's getting great results with the
MidiMan setup he's using too. Here are some links I've found:

Well, I use the audiophile 24/96, but the delta 10/10 has the external
dac. I still need to save up for a nice condensor mike and a digital mixer
to get all the functionality from the audiophile, right now I use a little
line level mixer and do my recording directly into an asrx sampler with an
SM 57 mike, which has given me decent results. I use the audiophile just
to record the sound off of my synths, since I still do most of my
composition via midi. Midiman openly supports Linux, which is really rare
for a sound hardware maker, so that's why I chose them over the
Hammerfall, but I've read that Paul Davis has had some really good results
with the hammerfall.

Probably true, but I found using the Audiophile 24/96 with alsa 0.9 was a
totally simple and painfree experience, though its possible that the RME
is similarly simple. All I know is my Audiophile, but once I realized I
needed to use envy24control with it I was off and running and the sound
quality I get with recordings blows my old SBLive card out of the water,
but then again the RME would similarly blow any consumer sound card away.
What's more important is that Midiman hasn't blocked the alsa developers
from having access to the needed specs, but I don't know about RME, it may
be that teh cards are equally supported, but I have read of some
difficulties people had with the RME which led me to chose a Midiman card
instead.

I have both, RME HDSP and a Delta 1010. Both work well with Ardour, or
any Linux program so far. It boils down to how many channels do you
need? If you can get by on 8 a Delta will do. If you need more go for
the RME. Personally I started with a Delta 1010. Then bought 2 more,
added 3 1010ai boxes, and hooked them up to an RME HDSP Digiface. I now
have a pci and cardbus interface for the RME Digiface, which makes it a
very versatile system.
If your intrerested in RME equipment check out www.sfb.net, they have
great pricing. They also stand behind there products. I was having
problems with my cardbus interface, so I sent it back to them. They are
replacing it with a new one, even though they could not find anyhting
wrong with it.

rawmidi device which is apparently better quality or latency or both.
There may need to be some changes to the alsa-docs but I will make sure
they are not forgotten.

People have got the Oxygen working but it is not a simple task. From what I have heard you need to have the original
windows firmware for
the Oxygen (which is somewhere in the windows driver). AFAIK
Midiman does
not provide the firmware (or authorize its use?), but I have not yet
looked at the driver cdrom. Once you have the firmware it should be
possible to download it to the keyboard in the same way the firmware for
the Midisport 1x1 or 2x2 is downloaded...
I have not tried yet (I have one here that I was testing).

Hmm... My laptop dual-boots into Windows 98 (under which the Oxygen 8
works OK) and Linux. I've found that, to use my UA-30 Audio Interface, I
have to boot first into Windows (which, as I understand it,
automatically downloads the firmware to the UA-30) then warm-boot into
Linux. Might the same be true for the Oxygen 8? If so, might I be able
to find some info from the setup or from my Windows cdrom that could
help you?

I heard about someone getting oxygen 8 to work, have you tried using the
usb midi driver in alsa with it? I think you may need to upgrade the
firmware on it the same way the other midiman usb midi interfaces get
upgraded, has anyone tried it?
