Hi,
i've got a question because I don't know where else to search.....
I tried working with Audacity for a while. I tried different versions,
rpm-packages, installing
via package manager, compiling from source (all successful), as root and
user and so on....
But everytime when I try to start audacity (with jack running or not) I
get a friendly
but plain:
"Segmentation fault"
When I try it a second time, nothing happens and then a zombie-like
audacity process
can be found in the process list that even can't be killed by killall or
kill pid.
I use openSuse10.2/JAD1.0 and I would be glad for any suggestion.

Does kill -9 work? If not, please run "dmesg" and check for a kernel Oops.

Well, kill -9 doesn't work either. If I use dmesg I get the following

I would assume that the answer is in the first line: a null pointer
dereference in the kernel.

The ice1712 is the module for my Terratec Phase88/Envy24 Chipset soundcard
which I successfully use all the time with any other audiosoftware on my
linux machine.

Okay, in that case perhaps the way that audacity is opening the capture
device is different to how other audio software does it.
There might be a way to reconfigure audacity to do this differently, and
so avoid the supposed problem. I don't know though. Audacity just
works for me.

I don't have the Terratec Phase88/Envy24 Chipset soundcard. I have
the Audigy 2ZS.
I don't use the JAD kernel-rt-2.6.19-5 (have it available). I use the
base openSUSE 10.2 kernel 2.6.18.2-34 and Audacity 1.2.4b-55 packages.
This works without problems. The newer Audacity package works in a
way I'm not comfortable with (in other words, the Audacity
1.3.4-2.pm.beta works, but I don't use it.)
May I suggest you return to the base openSUSE 10.2 kernel 2.6.18.2-34
and try your Audacity package. On occasion, for reasons I've not
attempted to discover, the JAD kernel-rt-2.6.19-5 will lock up
openSUSE 10.2. I'm waiting for the next JAD kernel to come out.

and try your Audacity package. On occasion, for reasons I've not
attempted to discover, the JAD kernel-rt-2.6.19-5 will lock up
openSUSE 10.2. I'm waiting for the next JAD kernel to come out.
I have another computer I work on, that is set up openSuse 10.2. I never
experienced problems using audacity with that distro. But the kernel
has no realtime capability.
What do you mean by "lock up" ?
If you refer to the new jacklab openSUSE-10.3 repo at
ftp.gwdg.de, the
kernel-source package there was made because Novell/SUSE didn't
supplied one,
and it is needed to build kernel modules (nvidia
etc.). It exactly
matches the
standard openSUSE 10.3 kernel-rt package.
openSuse 10.3 supplies a realtime kernel itself?

I found that there was no initial ram disk to use with the kernel. I
tried it anyway
and booting stopped for some missing modules

kernel or help you gain useful information? Because, since I found out
that the problem I had was connected with Audacity and my soundcard
chipset - not with the kernel - I don't need to setup a new kernel. The
openSuse 10.2 /JAD1.0 setup works fine and i would just use it as hitherto.

Now that's really strange. Oliver just told me he tried and it worked for
him in JAD 1.0. Can you please post the output of
"rpm -qpl kernel-rt-2.6.22.5-1.<yourarch>.rpm | grep initrd"
as I don't have it anymore locally?
Anyway, you can boot to any working kernel and run "mkinitrd" as root, this
will (re)generate initrd images for all your kernel images in /boot.

interesting, I use a Delta1010LT, and never saw something like
this. Audacity
isn't the most stable piece of software for me either, but the worst things
happening for me are crashes when changing the driver backend, or even when
stopping transport sometimes.
If you refer to the new jacklab openSUSE-10.3 repo at ftp.gwdg.de, the
kernel-source package there was made because Novell/SUSE didn't supplied one,
and it is needed to build kernel modules (nvidia etc.). It exactly matches the
standard openSUSE 10.3 kernel-rt package.
You could confirm it by trying to open the
capture device using a
simpler utility, such as arecord. If you get the same result, then you
have nicely excluded audacity from the problem, and identified the
kernel driver as likely cause.
The ice1712 is the module for my Terratec Phase88/Envy24 Chipset soundcard
which I successfully use all the time with any other audiosoftware on my
linux machine.
What I recommend ... check for a more recent
kernel in whatever
distribution you are using.
Hmm. Nothing available at the moment. It looks like they're working on a
openSuse 10.3 based JAD release but there is just a source available
that could
still be unstable. rebuild the kernel ...
O.o .... now you said the three magic words that makes me get shivers
down my spine.
I use the JAD kernel-rt-2.6.19-5.i586 Thats all I can say.
Unfortunately, I haven't got any clue
about how to recompile/change/patch a kernel. :(

Do you have a clue if there is an important difference between the
openSuse 10.3 realtime kernel and a JAD realtime kernel concerning audio
production? I set up an openSuse 10.3 system with the rt kernel and at
least jackd can be started in realtime mode. I didn't had the time to
try a lot more.
Another thing... i tried audacity with the 10.3 standard and realtime
kernel and in both cases i get the kernel oops [1] though audacity works
on my working machine. So i guess it has to be an audacity bug that is
connected with my chipset (firmware), not with the kernel. I'm going to
write a bug report to the audacity developers but for audio editing:
Is there a comparable jack-capable tool outthere? A tool that will
provide at least the basic editing, basic dsp (normalize, converting,
timestretch/pitchshift, eq, amp, maybe spectral view) and
ladspa-capable? Doesn't have to be a multitracker or very complex. just
something between basic & advanced.

If JACK is absolutely a must, I'd go for ReZound or mhwavedit. For
timestretching/pitch shifting, look at the new rubberband library, it's far
better than what audacity can do. Ardour2 already uses it in the current
2.0-ongoing svn branch, it's a real quality improvement.
