Today I finally took delivery of a new computer for my music, to take the place
of the old one that was showing real signs of stress. The new one is custom
built by Scan (UK). It is in a 4U rackmount case and has an AMD Ryzen 5 1500X
processor, on an ASUS motherboard and with a Radeon R5230 fanless graphics card.
Audio I/O is via an M-Audio Mtrack 8, and MIDI via a Prodipe 4i/4o.
That graphics card was a significant problem, as it was difficult to get hold of
one, but it was worth the hassle.
The machine arrived quite early this morning, extremely well packaged. They had
even put bubble wrap inside for additional shock protection - with a very clear
warning on the top! Looking inside it has been very neatly assembled, no random
loose wires. I added a CDROM drive I already had, and a second SSD, both of
these robbed from the older machine. The SSD has all my working project files
on it.
I installed devuan Linix 2.0.0 rc without any issues at all - no more
inexplicable SystemD failures. I then built up the system with all my favourite
programs. This was the most time consuming part of the install.
And the performance? Stunning! The machine is totally silent. There wasn't so
much as a whisper when maxing out all 8 cores compiling the latest Rosegarden
image! One of my most complex projects had to run at 5.33mS Latency on the old
machine, and I didn't dare touch anything while it was going. On the new one I
can run it at 1.33mS, and shuffle various windows around without a single Xrun.

It’s amazing how much Linux makes a computer fly....
Put Debian on my main PC today after running win10 for a few too many
months, took all of ten minutes and a couple of hours to set it up.!

Wow. Sounds like a gorgeous chunk of hardware. How long have you been
using Devuan, how does it compare in compatibility and performance?

This is the first time I've installed devuan. Release 2 is based on debian
stretch, so not cutting edge. However it has rt kernel 4.9 and everything else
seems pretty up-to-date. The only slight disappointment is it's slower on
startup, but I may let be able to tweak that.

Oh my. One of my complaints I've had with this modern era of DAW
recording, and also with the fact that I'm now actually able to afford
gear better than when I was younger (hence I have more of it), is that
whereas in the old days I used to be able to just hack together
something in an Ensoniq on-board sequencer and a couple of drum
machines, and send it to 4-track tape, now I'm always griping that
making a song takes prior planning and lots of equipment setup and
software configuration. Songwriting feels like planning a Space Shuttle
launch. You have a big mission book, and an initialization procedure,
and there needs to be a countdown with contingencies in case of
launchpad failure. Sometimes you forget that you were writing music,
and not trying to land on Mars.
But damn, man...you take the cake. :)

powers up an arduino
controlled sequential switcher. The keyboards are switched on first,then the
computer(configured to run when power appears). Once the switcher sees the 5V
from a USB socket it steps through and switches on all the other kit (amplifier

I have just started playing with arduinos and PIs, lots of fun. But my
external equipment is just mixer/amp right now... not much of a keyboard
player. That sounds like a good setup though.

write this). So far it's working very well. Happy to get rid of systemd,
which may have been a good idea at the start but by now has become a
uncontrolable mess (and therefore a security risk). Startup doesn't seem
to be slower. I'll install another laptop next week, and if all goes
well devuan makes a very good chance of replacing archlinux as my
preferred distro.

Heh, I've been using and observing systemd since Archlinux adopted it.
Have found it mildly amusing that the touted fast boot time has (too)
often more than been offset by having to wait minutes for the system
to shutdown/reboot...:)

Debian (init) and Debian (systemd).
But I can't guarantee that. When Debian first switched to systemd, I
had problems with it trying to mount my CIFS shares before it had set
up the network connection. And during updates, it still announces that

That device ID is not a 5450. Maybe they did not have HD5450 cards easily
available since they are replaced by newer devices, so they just gave you
the equivalent entry level card from the current devices.

burn-in.

Me and two colleague did research for 10Gb/s routing in PC-hardware some
15 years back. We did see a similar thing in some Intel cards. But then
it was new chip in old card model.

of the old one that was showing real signs of stress. The new one is custom
built by Scan (UK). It is in a 4U rackmount case and has an AMD Ryzen 5 1500X
processor, on an ASUS motherboard and with a Radeon R5230 fanless graphics card.
Audio I/O is via an M-Audio Mtrack 8, and MIDI via a Prodipe 4i/4o.
That graphics card was a significant problem, as it was difficult to get hold of
one, but it was worth the hassle.
The machine arrived quite early this morning, extremely well packaged. They had
even put bubble wrap inside for additional shock protection - with a very clear
warning on the top! Looking inside it has been very neatly assembled, no random
loose wires. I added a CDROM drive I already had, and a second SSD, both of
these robbed from the older machine. The SSD has all my working project files
on it.
I installed devuan Linix 2.0.0 rc without any issues at all - no more
inexplicable SystemD failures. I then built up the system with all my favourite
programs. This was the most time consuming part of the install.
And the performance? Stunning! The machine is totally silent. There wasn't so
much as a whisper when maxing out all 8 cores compiling the latest Rosegarden
image! One of my most complex projects had to run at 5.33mS Latency on the old
machine, and I didn't dare touch anything while it was going. On the new one I
can run it at 1.33mS, and shuffle various windows around without a single Xrun.

Total cost (including delivery) was 850 ukp, so not cheap. I had been holding
on to savings for some time specfically for this purchase though, as the
previous machine was 8 years old and showing signs of stress. It was also quite
noisy. The new one is silent, so on a quiet evening I can now very faintly hear
a whine from the backlight of one of my hardware synths :o
The socket will take a Ryzen 7 and the PSU and heatsink are more than capable.
I doubt whether I'll bother though the performance is better than my needs for
the foreseeable future :)

Silent/fanless probably wouldn't work here. Hawaii's average temp is a
bit warmer than the UK, and we have no air conditioning.
Mine used to have a fanless power supply. It stayed reasonably cool
(until it died) but contributed nothing to cooling the array of hard
drives that are in the box.

multicore/multithread CPUs very well. A Ryzen 7 or Threadripper would do. :)

very slow one on the CPU heatsink (not the default AMD one). When I did that
Rosegarden compile (all 8 CPUs pegged) the CPU fan moved just a sniff faster.

And the performance? Stunning! The machine is totally
silent. There wasn't so
much as a whisper when maxing out all 8 cores compiling the latest Rosegarden
image! One of my most complex projects had to run at 5.33mS Latency on the old
machine, and I didn't dare touch anything while it was going. On the new one I
can run it at 1.33mS, and shuffle various windows around without a single Xrun.
Sounds good.
